When Zümra’s shift begins, she pulls on her boiler suit and heads down into the loud, hot engine room ⚙️⛴️

As Fourth Engineer aboard Dunkerque Seaways, she works alongside the crew to solve technical challenges and keep the ship moving between the UK and France.

“Since I started as a cadet, I’ve worked on many different DFDS vessels, and I can truly say this: DFDS is not only successful in maritime and logistics, but also in bringing together warm-hearted, kind people,” says Zümra ✨

It’s the support from experienced colleagues that has been one of the most rewarding parts of her journey at sea.

“Deepest thanks and respect to every engineer and officer who has guided me, and who continues to guide me along the way,” Zümra says ⚙️💙

Meet our fleet: Tanger Express ⛴️

Today, we’re stepping aboard Tanger Express, sailing between Algeciras and Tanger Med 🌊

More than 900 passengers and up to 344 vehicles can travel on this ship 👩🏿‍🤝‍👨🏼🛻 It can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots 🧭

Onboard, Shop Supervisor Houda el Kessire leads the duty-free shop team and makes sure passengers get a welcoming experience during the journey.

“What excites me most is meeting people from different cultures. No two days are the same onboard, and you never know what the day will bring,” says Houda.

Departure from Felixstowe ⛴️

Deck Officer @ewelinaarosa and Chief Officer Piotr Konkel during departure onboard Suecia Seaways.

Safe manoeuvring is always the top priority.

“We have to be aware of the weather conditions, traffic and any obstructions. That affects the way we decide to move the ship,” Ewelina explains.

Her favourite task onboard is keeping the navigational night watch on the bridge.

“It’s calm and quiet, and when the visibility is good, I really enjoy the beautiful views of the moon,” says Ewelina 🌛

What makes a great captain? ⛴️

For Ben May, captain of Dunkerque Seaways on the Dover-Dunkerque route, leadership is just as important as ship handling.

Ben is responsible for everything from inspections and maintenance to supporting the wellbeing of his crew 🤝

His leadership style comes down to something refreshingly simple: having an open door 💬

“I want every crew member to feel comfortable approaching me, whether they have a work-related issue or something more personal. The ship becomes more than just a workplace, it becomes our home,” says Ben.

After more than 20 years at sea, here’s Ben’s advice for anyone considering a maritime career:

“Always be polite and treat everyone with respect. Build good relationships from day one, and you’ll find people are often willing to go the extra mile to help you when you need it. Those relationships can often be just as important as the qualifications you earn”.
