Playing touch rugby around the world at a national level means Jeffrey understands the importance of teamwork, resilience and making connections.

This not only helps him in his personal life, but in his professional one too as an Account Manager in our Markets and Securities Services team in Singapore.

“The sport has taught me to never give up when things get tough, and being a team sport, you can never achieve true greatness if you’re alone at the top.”

After developing a passion for rugby in high school, Jeffery started playing touch rugby in his 20s. Since then, he’s played for the national team while studying and working in Ireland, and later for Malaysia when he moved back home.

And his passion for rugby continues. After joining HSBC in Singapore in 2025, Jeffrey still plays with local touch clubs and was even tapped to play for Singapore’s masters national team.

“I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to experience different cultures in different countries at different stages of my life. It allowed me to develop my interpersonal skills and understand different cultural nuances.”

It’s these experiences, Jeffery believes, that have been invaluable in helping him connect with people from diverse backgrounds, and to approach new challenges with an open mind – which helps at work too.

“While touch is a very skilful sport — it’s also truly inclusive, with mixed genders, different abilities, and age groups from juniors all the way to over 60s.”

Whether she’s travelling or practising her public speaking skills as a Toastmaster, Fern enjoys meeting people from around the world.

Having previously lived and worked in New York, Shanghai, Singapore and Frankfurt, when she joined HSBC as a Senior Product Developer in 2021, she decided to set up HSBC London Toastmasters to build her connections at work.

Toastmasters clubs help teach public speaking and leadership skills, and helped Fern become a more confident speaker, communicator and leader… as well as helping her professionally.

“So much of my job relies on presenting, speaking confidently and being able to think on my feet. Having a club to regularly practise these skills in a safe and supportive environment is like having a gym to train in before running a race.”

Since starting the club in January 2025, it’s now grown to 33 members and counting, and they recently won two awards at the Toastmasters International District Championships.

But more than the success and accolades, Fern is most happy with how the club helps people say “yes” to opportunities that might have been scary in the past.

“Our members have even credited HSBC London Toastmasters with helping them achieve promotions; the skills and confidence they gained has helped them get noticed by others as being ready for the next level.”

By day, Nicolas is helping keep HSBC safe from cyber threats. Outside of work, he’s training hard for his next competitive sprint.

Nicolas has built an impressive collection of sporting medals over the last 10 years – recently adding another at the Football v Homophobia Awards in London. His passion for inclusive sport began in 2012, when a casual kickabout with friends grew into Zorros LGBTQ+, now a professional NGO and safe space for athletes.

Nicolas explained, “Zorros LGBTQ+ wasn't just a team, but a safe space. Turning professional ensured that we could protect our right to play sport without discrimination – and to make sport accessible for everyone, no matter who they are.”

Today, Nicolas sprints with HSBC Mexico’s athletics team and brings the same focus to his role as Lead Cybersecurity Analyst at our Global Service Centre in Mexico.

"Athletics has taught me discipline, and consistency, which I bring into my work, each day.”

From flying helicopters and surfing to snowboarding with his dog Glen, Seth’s intrepid pursuits always spark client conversations.

This helps him in his role as a Director in our Corporate and Institutional Banking business in Sydney, Australia – a country Seth moved to from the US in 2017 to spend more time in the great outdoors.

“Building rapport with people is a crucial part of my role, and my hobbies are a memorable and interesting connection point with clients.

“In challenging myself to learn new skills and test my limits, I've become more adaptable and often apply this mindset to problem-solving for clients.”

At weekends, Seth volunteers as a commercial helicopter pilot, giving tourists a bird’s eye view of Sydney’s sights and helps with emergency rescue efforts when necessary.

He also enjoys climbing, hiking, trekking, mountain biking, running and surfing. And, if that wasn’t enough, Glen his faithful furry friend often joins him on the slopes.
