Calling all QTBIPOC cyclists! 🚲✨ Join us Sunday May 19 at 9a on a bike ride from @bikeplantnyc to Astoria Park for a morning of community, connection, and adventure. As BIPOC and queer riders, we’re coming together to celebrate our love for cycling and our vibrant communities. Let’s pedal through the streets, take up space and soak in the beauty of Astoria Park together. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just starting out, all bikes are welcome to join in the fun! This is a no drop ride that will return to Bed-Stuy.

Hey y’all! It is hard to believe it’s been nearly 5 years since this photo was taken on DG’s bike camping adventure in September 2019. 🏕️

It is an understatement to say the past 5 years has been a lot of everything from:
breakups to
cancer to
pandemic shut down to
job losses to
book deals to
new born babies to
stimulus checks to
rent strikes to
a new normal to
mental health crises to
homesteads to
cosmic wonders to
live streamed genocides 🇵🇸🇸🇩🇨🇩 to
encampments to
revolution ✊🏿 to
life that keeps on living.

All along we’ve watched you continue on your cycling and outdoor journeys. Living your lives with fullness. We’ve watched you exemplify humanity holding up our communities in grief, joy, love, and all the ways we collectively care for us.

While we were away we took deep and necessary care of ourselves, and we took time to reflect and reminisce on all the joy Different Gear brought to our lives.

We are ecstatic to announce that we’re planning a comeback!

This will be a sunset ride from BedStuy to Randall's Island. @bedstuybikes is hosting our start and finish. At Randall's, we'll picnic with the Full Moon Rise, but as always everyone is welcome to do what serves them best before we return to bk.

PLEASE NOTE: This ride is during nightfall, so LIGHTS ARE REQUIRED. If you do not have lights, there will be some lights to borrow and lights for purchase.

💲 LGBTQIAGNC BIPOC $5 ; ALLIES $10

RIDERS helmets and lights are mandatory! Bring a bike lock off you plan to walk away from your bike at any time. DG leaders will bring light snacks and water, but please bring all the things that keep you comfortable and fed during the ride. There is a route map to share, and upon request we can share shorter route options for those who want to join but are a bit nervous about the distance. No drop ride = no one left behind. All levels of riders are welcome!

ALLIES you are welcome as long as you remember that this is a safe space centering all the Black and Brown people who choose to show up in whatever identity they hold.
we define our allies as people who:
- do not identify as LGBTQIA+ BIPOC
- wish to make visible and advance the work of QTBIPOC
- have begun the work of dismantling internalized biases.

Join us on our annual PRIDE RIDE - as a community member, ally or general lover of all things & beings - on SATURDAY JUNE 26th!!
We'll take a one way ride from Ronald McNair Park to Riis Beach.

At the beach feel free to kick it with us or go off and do your own thing. No pressure either way!

PLEASE NOTE: This is a ONE WAY ride TO Riis Beach. We will provide directions for a return route and also directions via train.

*No one is turned away for lack of funds

We'll have light snacks and water, but please be sure to bring whatever you need to feel comfy and satiated at the beach (blankets, water, snacks, etc).

PLEASE NOTE - We respect and appreciate our healthy allies and explicitly name that our mutual work is a space where the empowerment and visibility of #QTPOC is centralized. For the purposes of Different Gear, ALLY is defined as a person that does not identify as a queer or trans person of color whom is open to share opportunities to grow/find/acquire resources, visibility and advance the work in which we are already engaged.

While we understand that everyone's financial, physical, and mental attributes are different, we ask that you wear a helmet. Please bring a lock to secure your bike after the ride and cash to purchase things along the way.

This is a no drop ride, so no one will be left behind.

Please pump your bike tires before joining the event. If it has been more than FIVE days since you have inflated your tires, YOU MUST INFLATE THEM.

We were stoked to learn about SJ Brooks Scholarship recipient Amber Drew @_a_chanel from @lifecyclebiking

“Amber, an advocate for access to physical & mental healthcare, has worked largely with assisting clients diagnosed with and affected by chronic medical and mental health ailments to gain self-efficacy and stability. She utilizes her experience in clinical psychology in concentrated community building projects, LifeCycle Biking (a community based organization focused on emotional health promotion and community building through cycling, particularly for women/femme bodies, people of color, LGBTQIA+ bodies and low income communities) and Apogeo Collective (a pop up bed & breakfast experience for queer travelers, travelers of color and their allies).

Amber enjoys being active outdoors, spending time with magical people and partaking in new adventures. A proponent of eudaemonism, Amber focuses energy on building spaces for her communities to thrive developing programming that explores the benefits of collective wellness and emphasizing the necessity of inclusion of disregarded identities in alternative avenues of health management.

The SJ Brooks Scholarship is such AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY! And I intend to utilize my scholarship to host another bike ride for my target demos in Brooklyn (before the cold weather lessens our group numbers!), continue collaboration efforts on a fundraising initiative for Freedom Riders- a workforce development bike mechanic and mental health curriculum program for recently incarcerated minority young adults and women and honestly, pay some bills.”

In order to make our ride safer and more socially-distanced, and to streamline donations to our non-profit partners, masks are MANDATORY and there will be NO indoor checkpoints and NO food purchased from supermarkets.⁣
🛒⁣
Instead, all checkpoints will be outdoors, ranging from fun little trivia and activity checkpoints and photo opps around Brooklyn, to visits to the actual non-profit organizations, where you can make cash or electronic donations.⁣
🚲⁣
Not only is this a safer option, but it's also a far more effective way to get funds into the hands of those who need them. Spending $20 on groceries is great (and fun!) but if you give that $20 directly to an organization, they can buy way more than $20 worth of food, or they can spend the money on much-needed and less sexy options like office paper, cleaning supplies, and paying much-needed staff.⁣

Though we'll have an in-person meetup at Restoration Plaza in Bed-Stuy @12pm (ride starts at 1pm), we'll also release the manifest online at 12pm for anyone who feels unsafe coming to the group meet up. Meeting at Restoration Plaza is not required but we'll have volunteers on-hand to answer any questions you may have about the ride. @bedstuybikes is also right there if you need any quick adjustments made to your bike or need to buy lights, locks, or other gear.⁣

Prizes will be awarded for most points, most checkpoints completed, best costume, best Instagram photo, first family, plus other categories we are still thinking up. Everyone will have a chance to win something, even if this is your first ride and you aren’t that fast. ALL participants will also receive a $20 Trek gift card for participating.⁣

Black Queer folks we see you. We care about you. We honor you. As we enter into the 11th week of uprisings and 7 months of coronavirus, we see the short and long term impacts on our bodies, our communities, and our futures. We see how we are simultaneously winning and navigating unbearable devastation. We honor your grief, your rage, your hope, your radical Black imagination towards freedom.

This liberation ride will make intentional stops at Black-owned businesses and Black-owned healing spaces to center the power and necessity of Black healing in these times. Each stop will be guided by the wisdom of Black ancestry, the ecosystem of the elements (fire, earth, water, air), and the joy of Blackness.
