We are a Biofabrication R&D Studio and Community Lab, our mission is to make research accessible and making it matter to the world.

Our R&D studio supports companies and research labs in exploring and de-risking biomaterial and bio-based innovations. Our project partners span a broad spectrum, from material science organisations, creative agencies, fashion brands, to hospitals and medical training educators.

Our open-access lab offers membership-based research places, giving you space to pursue passion projects, research, and start-ups across biomaterials, living systems, and sustainable technology. 🧫

Find out more about our work across:
- R&D collaborations
- Researcher memberships (join us as a researcher via the link in our bio 🔗)
- Weekly public courses, workshops and events.
- Outreach through hands-on learning, accessible workshops, research-grade facilities, & accredited courses for schools and kids.
- Medical printing and training for NHS Hospitals.

As an interdisciplinary hub, Lifefabs Institute is here for you to create solutions with impact and get into biofabrication. 🥼

Processes, experiments and encounters in Madrid 🦠

Our co-director @charlottewerth_ brought a bit of what we do here to @complementarios___ an exhibition by @dimad_ that welcomed more than 7,000 visitors!

She showed her bacterial dyeing and textile pattern tests, many of them created during her design residency at @maisonzero. A film by @maelhenaff took the audience right inside the process.

There was also a talk with artist Raquel Buj @buj.studio about the work on show, moderated by curator @ines.sistiaga

Charlotte’s participation was made possible thanks to the support of @britishcouncil. Thank you for helping this work travel further!

Curious about creating with bacteria? Come visit the Lifefabs lab and check out our workshops, link in bio.

One of our missions is to bring science out of the laboratory into everyday life and explore how it can shape the world we live in. And who better to do that with than the children who will help build our future? 🍄🔬

At Camden STEAM Primary’s Career Fair at @royalvetcollege, children explored a range of materials through touch, smell, and close observation under the microscope, guessing what each one might be. Among the samples was bacterial cellulose, not bacon! 🥓🦠 They then imagined the future of fashion, drawing garments from the discovered materials.

There was also an introduction to mycelium with activities designed by Layla Kornota. The children discovered how fungi can be used to create everyday objects and imagined their own inventions.

Would you like to bring activities like these to your school or community? Get in touch at outreach@lifefabs.bio. by @lifefabs

Learn how to laser cut your own designs into bacterial cellulose with biodesign researcher Sophie Kirkpatrick!

Bacterial cellulose is a material grown during kombucha brewing, and it can be used as a biodegradable alternative to plastic, leather or paper. You’ll sketch and prepare a design, then cut and engrave it into your own patch, coaster, bookmark or decoration to take home.

Bring your own design or choose one of ours.

Last Academic year, Lifefabs Institute hosted researcher Rafaela Jorge Cecconi @rafajcecconi for a 3-month Biofabrication Residency.

Rafa’s developed a wearable patch that transforms menstrual phases into a visible language using electrochromic bacterial cellulose.

Come meet Rafa and find out more about her work at Lifefabs. Keep and eye out for future residencies between Lifefabs Institute and MA Biodesign @mabiodesign at Central Saint Martins @csm_news University of the Arts London @unioftheartslondon . by @lifefabs

What if we could dye jeans using only bacteria? 🦠👖

That was the question behind this project by @openarea_ _ and @levislondon with our co-lead @charlottewerth_.

Charlotte has worked with bacterial dyeing for years. She even built a machine to explore the patterns these microorganisms can leave on fabric.

This time, the challenge was to create a denim outfit for an artist, fast. The colour needed to work across both the shirt and the jeans, while leaving room for what makes the process so interesting: the patterns that emerge as bacteria produce pigment on the fabric. The result looks a little like a cloudy sky. ☁️

Denim blue is so familiar that we rarely stop to think about how it gets there. Conventional dyeing can use a lot of water, energy and chemicals. What if, in the future, we could grow some of that colour instead?

This outfit is a first glimpse of that possibility. It’s the kind of question we love bringing to life at Lifefabs.
