When it comes to money saving and spending habits, I had a lot to learn from my mom. Raising me alone, she has always had to be money smart and she passed on some traits to me. While we have different strengths when it comes to being money smart, we both know how to optimize our skills.

My mom knows how to budget and plan based on her income and she also engaged in thrift savings (Ajo). My mom is also someone who believes that you should not deprive yourself something nice too often. She knows how to balance her saving habits with her spendings through her budgeting skills.
She also instilled the habit of saving in me. I may not have totally gotten her super planning skills but I'm very good at saving up money and this always comes in handy.

A particular money related memory I have is when my mom got me my first kolo (a wooden box used to save money) when I was still in primary school. Now this is common with most Nigerian households and it really helped build a sense of responsibility in me. Being able to be in charge of something on my own made me so happy.

To conclude, I've learnt from my mom over the years to cultivate a saving habit, properly plan around your income and most importantly, give yourself little treats every now and then.
