Heading out on the water? Don’t bring a drink!Your safety depends on sound judgment. Alcohol severely impairs your balance, reflexes, and ability to think clearly—making it a major risk factor for drowning. Avoid substances in, on, and around the water. Stay hydrated and stay safe!#NDPW2026 #Prepare #Prevent #watersafety #bewatersmart by @lifesavingbcyk

Having a few drinks can be fun—but not while on the water. The wind, sun, and waves can actually make you feel more drunk than if you were on land. Boats are big machines, like cars – being impaired makes it hard to steer and slows your reaction time.Remember to choose sparkling water or pop, and save the beer or cocktail for the dock. #NDPW2026 #watersafety #Prepare #Prevent #BeWaterSmart by @lifesavingbcyk

Even if you’re fishing, boating, or walking near water, it’s important to know how to swim. Most people who drown never intended to be in the water. All it takes is a strong current or loss of balance. Immersion is sudden, unexpected, and often silent. That’s why we have the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard: a program that teaches fundamental swimming skills so you can survive an unexpected fall into the water. 1️⃣ Roll into deep water: simulate an unexpected fall into water and orientate yourself at the surface.2️⃣ Tread water for 1 minute: keep yourself afloat as you call for help and locate somewhere safe to swim to.3️⃣ Swim 50 meters: use any method of swimming to reach the closest point of safety. Learning how to Swim to Survive is an essential step towards staying safe in, on, and around the water. Together, we can prevent drowning.#NDPW2026 #Prepare #Prevent #watersafety #bewatersmart by @lifesavingbcyk
