Q. any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?

I’m not going to list any specifics - I do that on a daily to weekly basis on my stories on instagram, and I like it that way. For me, generally, I love romance books, essays, and poetry. I love lyrical poetry overall, especially for titles and conjuring imagery up while I look at the world and decide to translate it into 2d formats. Music is a large part of my process in tuning into my paint in the studio. The way I tune into social media (mostly just instagram) is to just use it as a collage of inspiration instead of a place to “upkeep” like a living breathing pinterest that is much more intuitive that I get to control. Travels, gardens, interior designers, furniture and household products and textiles, floral design, patterns, colours, books, the bible, spiritual or psychology texts, and other artists are all woven into creating my work because I just find endless inspiration through it ALL.

A couple more paintings 36” x 48” being offered online next week 🌸☘️

Q. A brief overview of how I got to where I am today:

I was born in South Africa and came to Canada when I was very small. I grew up in Cabri, Saskatchewan, a little town in the southwest of the Canadian prairies.

Out there, art classes were a long drive away. In middle school, an older friend with her license took me to Swift Current at the art gallery for a few weeks of beginner acrylics. After that, whenever I was alone on our acreage, with friends far away and nothing busy for miles, I painted on the floor in our basement. Not every day, and some seasons barely at all, but it became the thing I kept coming back to.

After a heavy first year of science & general undergrad, I wanted work that could hold me up and still let me make things. So I studied visual communications at Medicine Hat College. It taught me more about paint than I’d ever known, though not enough to find my own voice. It was a good place to begin. I didn’t imagine I could live off painting, so I became a full-time junior designer.

A year later, I moved cities and couldn’t find design work. My partner at the time encouraged me to lean into the selling of my paintings I’d been quietly building up at markets & online. It was a slow turning. Little by little, I found my language in what I loved most: prairie skies, flowers, and wheat, which became my emblem. People around me began to see themselves in fine art, maybe for the first time.

Q. A description of what I do and what I think sets me apart from others 💗

My main approach to making my art now is through canvas & oil paint. I am a very loose, abstract, impressionistic artist. My process includes thinking of interiors, taking photos and collaging them and setting up colour palletes alonsgide them so that I have a sort of end goal in mind. The process from moment to moment is a lot more free that way and I change it as I go without much methodical super rational thought. I reach for the flow as often as I can instead of guiding it through a step by step moment. That’s why reproducing what I do can be difficult for others because the layers and brushstrokes are simply so much of their own thing. I am primarily known for prairie landscapes & wheat, but do a lot of garden/foliage work and have now incorporated more portraits that are inspired by my children and our experiences together.

I am most proud that although I do get very inspired by other creators my style and approach has always been my own. I cannot say that I am like another painter as I have not come fully across one. I have not simplified it to the point where I could be totally categorized in that respect and I love it that way. I also long to work very loose most of the time and then I will also allow myself in between meditations of a tighter approach. I love my colour work, I simply love that I can connect with people on a real and felt level in my work — that I don’t necessarily have to be in large centers to really “get people”. I will always be open to extraordinary opportunities, but I am equally happy with my humble beginnings and those that support me to make a true living off my work based on mutual benefits of the art being in their spaces and businesses.
I wouldn’t totally set myself apart – I have recently decided I’ll be more honest and real about what I love in life though, more connected in it and unafraid to share it. It may come off cliche, or corny at times but I don’t mind anymore. I’m here for myself to enjoy this life experience and showcase to my sons that they can also live in a way that is true and good.

Never too late to write your lists steeped in thanks

I am so so very thankful for my life. I’m so happy to spend it with people who I can love and who love me just the same. I am more than grateful for my sons and what we have going on. I am indebted to my creativity and the freedom and healing it has allowed me. I’m even thankful for what I lost over the last few years, even though it hurt like he 🏒 🏒 to lose it. God forbid you care so deeply for someone that it really does bog you down for a time, allow yourself disappointment. It’s okay.

I was a pretty thankful person beforehand - I think certain personalities can misconstrue your dreams and goals and preferences as not being thankful but that’s another topic for a different day. Consistently I find myself with my eyes leaking in gratitude when that divine feeling in my chest starts aching and a song comes on that makes me realize, wow, this is what life is for. When I hear my youngest giggle and I haven’t even neared his neck in kisses yet? grateful. When I have to translate my toddlers grunts and signs and expressions? grateful. When I get to move my body in new expressions and feel in touch, but also strong? grateful. When I see the magnificent light throughout a day that this solar system filters through our leaves, and grass and clouds? grateful. The sheer connection and awe that comes with being an artist who people collect on a daily basis to inspire their own lives? I’m not sure there’s a word for beyond grateful.

This life is for me, and I will try my hardest to get to a point where I allow someone to see my vulnerabilities again and forever love me for it. Until that day, I’m glad of my strength and my ability to try and try again in the areas that feed my soul.

Thank you for all who walk in and around and through my life with encouragement, accountability, kindness, compassion, and excitement 💫

I would not classify myself in the teaching spectrum of things but if a little encouragement / studio tour from me gives your little a bit more confidence, I’ve considered that time well spent ☘️💫
