National Daughters Day…

I know I have two now. 😂 And I’m fully where I’m supposed to be… right in the thick of being a girl dad, surrounded by women. My whole house… including the dog.

But this one’s for my firstborn.

I keep seeing memories pop up from the last few years and thinking…

Where the hell did my baby go?!

The magic of having a 4 yr old is that one minute she’s showing off this full grown, adult way of thinking that makes me wonder when she got so smart…

And the next, she’s having a complete meltdown because “I CAN DO IT!”... even though I already did it for her.

I’ve said this before, and I say it to new parents all the time:

Time was never really “real” to me until we had Penny.

You hear people say how fast it goes, but you don’t truly understand it until you’re watching your own child grow. One day she’s two, and the next you’re wondering where your baby went.

I know I won’t remember every little moment forever. When I’m 80, so much of this will probably be a blur. So I try to slow down and appreciate the ordinary days while I’m still living them. Rich people talk about how they missed the golden years of watching their kids grow up.. years they’ll never get back. Some parents I see miss this window and I can see the disconnect between them on their kids. The bond is missing something you can't quite put your finger on... every time to me, in my head.. it's that.

Because one day she won’t reach up to hold my hand. One day she’ll get in a car and drive away. And I’d probably give anything to come back and spend one ordinary day with her exactly as she is right now.

So while I have it, I’m taking every moment I can get.

I want to know her better than she knows herself.. to be her parent, protector, friend, and guide through this whole adventure.

And hopefully, no matter how big she gets, she’ll always know she can reach for my hand.

…who I LITERALLY just had to pick up early from her after-school program because she wasn’t listening to the teacher and was leading other kids away to go play games. 😂😂😂

Growing up, I remember watching other kids’ parents surprise them at school.

They’d show up with McDonald’s for lunch, pick them up early for a fun day, or just randomly appear and make an ordinary school day feel special.

And I remember little me always wishing I could have that.

Just once.

Today, I got to be that parent.

Picked Penny up from school early, and we’re about to see the rerelease of Avengers: Endgame together.

She’ll probably just remember that Dad picked her up from school to go see a movie.

But for me, it’s a little more than that.

Sometimes being a dad means getting to give your kids the little moments you wished for when you were one.

Pretty damn cool. ❤️

We've left Green Bay. And as much of a rivalry it is in our blood as Bears fans.. we had a wonderful weekend with family and friends sharing laughs and love.

See ya later Green Bay!

Happy 4th birthday to my Penny Rose 🌹

With her baby sister coming in just a few weeks, I’ve caught myself thinking a lot about how fast this all goes.. about her not being the only child anymore, about learning to share the attention. And how she'll deal with it all, and my responsibility to keep my relationship strong with her one on one still. It’s made me slow down and soak in these moments just a little longer.

We can already see so much of us in her, and I’m so proud of who she already is. I can’t wait to see her become a big sister.

When Casey & Penny were flying to Chicago yesterday morning, Penny wanted to say "I love you" and "bye" to me.. so instead of FaceTime due to the flight taking off, Casey recorded it. And what she captured was more meaningful than we both expected.

You never really know, but you just hope you're doing this whole parenting thing right. I've wanted to be the parent I was missing since my early teens as far as I can recall.

This video I got Sunday - the look she gives after whispering it in Casey's ear, the blushing. - it's confirms to me I'm on the right track. It pulls at strings only she can pull on. It confirms to me that I'm not just showing up, or present.. not just a title because she has my blood. But teach her things no one did for me as she learns this world she'll try to bend.. confront her but help her breath when all she can do is yell, protect her from the bad guys for as long as my limbs allow me to.. but most of all, be more than a title.. be the person I never had.

I've watched this video 10+ times in the last 24hrs. I'm so grateful for the life I've been given. My connection to her is one I'll move mountains to protect. by @lifewithjer
