Towards the end of last year, I traveled to Kogi State with @eoudeelferink on assignment for @nrcnl to photograph the aftermath of the devastating floods that ravaged many states across Nigeria, and how the people are slowly rebuilding their lives.

Kogi state particularly has been experiencing seasonal flooding almost yearly for 19 years but nothing of this magnitude. The flood which was caused by the opening of the Lagdo dam and torrential rainfall. In August, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency predicted that the prevailing weather pattern in Nigeria would cause above-normal rainfall in about 19 states between August and October 2022.

Families who lost their homes and property on the riverbank in Lokoja has been living in a nearby scuhool turned into an IDP camp for months at Saint Luke's Primary School, Adankolo, in Kogi State.

Charcoal Rush
Loggers attempts to cross flooded stream on their way to the forest.
Nigeria is losing her thick forest at an alarming rate due to increase in global appetite for charcoal which has placed so much demand on the country's forest.

Charcoal production is one of the main causes of deforestation in Africa, which in turn is closely linked to massive decrease in soil quality and a growing risk of crop failure. According to the Food and Agricultural Organisation, Nigeria has lost 50% of its forest cover in two decades and is losing at 5% a year, the highest in the world. At this rate, experts warn, the country would loss all its forests by 2047.

Documenting Agbaibor’s relocation journey back into the wild was a phenomenal experience, closing a beautiful loop for me.
Earlier this year, I was on the ground at Okomu National Park with @nps_nigeria tracking the incredible rangers who protect this landscape. It was during that assignment that I first laid eyes on this orphaned calf at the @ani_foundation Arakhuan Outpost. Seeing how much he has grown since then is nothing short of incredible.
We had braced ourselves for a gruelling, full-day walk through a heavily rainy day in the deep rainforest. I am so incredibly happy and grateful that this resilient calf had a different plan and made the journey so much easier for all of us involved.

A visual look into a lifetime of archiving. I had the honour of photographing this feature for @csmonitor , written by Monday Ogar, documenting Dr Raphael James’ incredible history museum, @crimmd_nigeria

This assignment became deeply personal to me. Beyond the photoshoot, Dr James gifted me a signed copy of his book and the profound encouragement I needed to start my own journey.

Head over to the link in my bio to view the feature! https://www.csmonitor.com/Perspectives/Making-a-difference/2026/0826/nigerian-history-lagos-museums
