The Radplate Series Art Lighting was an attempt/challenge to create the thinnest, yet most vivid, visual razors of light floating in air. To do this, 1/8" layers of Aircraft aluminum and various colors of fluorescent acrylic were used in conjunction with flat, low-voltage LED arrays and ultra fine 30g wire. The F1 Suspension was a project to design art lighting to inspire and compliment the TEDx Austin 2013 conference held at the Circuit of the America's new $100 million Formula 1 racetrack in Austin. To design the piece we considered the shape of the track itself, its long sloping curves, which also mirrored the observation tower (designed by Miro Rivera Architects), as well. . The final piece was made of water-jet cut aluminum, nearly 10 feet long by 12" x 3/8" thick with layers of dichroic film and wireless, color changing LEDs on the upper deck. Its flowing curved appearance is at once like the profile of an F1 car and a section of the racetrack itself.
