On the corner of Broadway & Howard, Lightning takes its next form.

Picture it: a velvet seat in the lounge where a stranger becomes a friend, records spinning in the listening room until conversation turns to dance, long tables filled with shared plates and ideas, rooftop sunsets that make the whole city feel like your living room…

Born from a decade of gathering New York's most curious minds, this is Lightning's evolution.

A social campus to spark connection, curiosity, and joy.

A place where adventurous intellectuals gather and co-create culture.

A new, permanent home.

We’re nearing the end of sawdust season (still, the drills hum, the hammers sing), giving way to our pre-launch programming.

Applications for our founding member cohort open later this month, and we can’t wait to welcome you.

"I started Lightning Society because I wanted to create a network of trust at scale.” – our founder, Timothy Phillips.

In 2016 Lightning Society Lofts in Brooklyn opened its doors: 17 bedrooms, one roof deck, countless gatherings. Barbecues under the skyline. Living room salons. An annual Halloween party where every inch transformed into Frightening Society.

Soon, there was a waitlist of over a thousand.

It turns out, a lot of people want to be part of a network of trust.

A Yale-trained architect who chose to build community instead of condos, Timothy has spent the past decade focused on generating lasting connections. Now, his architecture background is at the heart of our SoHo.
30,000 square feet reimagined into…

— Lounges where members host their own circles and celebrations
— An elixir bar for slow conversations over spirited blends
— A club room with a stage for live performance and provocation
— A beautifully designed dining space where members and their guests share meals and conversation
— A vinyl listening room to drop into sound
— A library begging for the best book clubs ever
— A cafe with artisan bites and beverages
— And a rooftop to gather above the hum of Broadway

From Brooklyn lofts and inspiring events to a landmark SoHo campus: We’re bringing you a new kind of membership club, sparked by Timothy’s vision. by @lightningsociety

Presencia means presence in Spanish, and Natalia Clavier designed her immersive concert to bring us back to it.

She sang and played, and song by song we joined her, singing, dancing, celebrating her birthday, and cheering as two of her friends grabbed the mic for a surprise beatbox duet, until the music slowed to breath and stillness, and nobody was anywhere else.

Thank you, Natalia, for the gift of presence, and happy birthday 🥳

What’s the last moment you didn’t want to photograph, just feel?

⚡️The next Presencia will be something else entirely, so come be part of it through the link in bio. taken in Lightning Society by @lightningsociety

Dr. Shefali walked in, picked up the mic, and gently told a room full of grown adults that the kids are fine. It’s us.

She’s the founder of the conscious parenting movement. Oprah has had her on Super Soul, Drew Barrymore has had her on her couch, and she still somehow made a book launch feel like a conversation with your wisest, funniest friend.

She came to launch Raising Conscious Daughters and Raising Conscious Sons. What we got was lots of laughing, a little bit of being called out, and nobody checking their phone.

Thank you, @doctorshefali, for being exactly as real in person as you are on the page. Come back anytime!

We get to choose to take care of each other. And sometimes that just starts with a “tell me more” when someone shares their story.

Welcome to the connective, beautiful, and alive world we dreamed of. Welcome to StoryTell.

Always meet your heroes. 🌿

SO grateful to the legendary anthropologist and ethnobotanist Wade Davis for guiding our NYC community through the life, legacy, and extraordinary journeys of Richard Evans Schultes, a pivotal figure in the history of psychedelics.

An enormous thank you to Lightning Society for welcoming us into their gorgeous space and giving us a home for an evening of psychedelic history, storytelling, culture, and community. We couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful backdrop for this conversation.

Endless gratitude to our incredible team for Assembling early, staying late, moving a mountain of chairs, and working so hard behind the scenes to pull the whole thing off. We 💛 you!

Thank you to @sychedup for the beautiful photos and full recording of this talk (coming soon!) 🎥

And finally, thank you to every single person who came out for this (from near and far.) Whenever we meet someone who tells us they flew in all the way in from another state just to attend one of our offerings, it makes us feel like we’re maybe on the right path. 🙏 taken in Lightning Society by @lightningsociety

Thank you to everyone who believed in the dream and supported before there was anything to see.

This space, and everything that happens in it, is a reflection of the incredible people who have shown up to make it happen. That’s our community, that’s you.

Thank you for your patience! Thank you for your trust, we can’t wait to show you what’s coming next.

Get ready!

Our third floor was designed for the people who bring it to life.

Anyone who has spent time here knows it never looks the same twice. Indelible in Soho’s history since the 1800s, but every gathering gives the space a new identity.

It has become a home for book launches, reading salons, breathwork sessions, showrooms, Drink, Draw, Dance, and countless conversations. Every host brings something different, and every gathering is part of our story.

What would you bring here? 🧐⚡️ taken in Lightning Society by @lightningsociety

Memory, like womanhood, is passed down without words. We carry it without ever having picked it up.

The joi Film Salon brought a curated selection of short films from around the world to Lightning Society, each one chosen by Paris-born filmmaker Ani Simon-Kennedy for the way it explores memory as inherited, reshaped, and carried across generations. Her feature The Short History of the Long Road premiered at Tribeca in 2019. Her work has screened at top festivals worldwide, supported by Sundance, Film Independent, and the Gotham, which named her one of their 2025 Series Creators to Watch.

After the screening, the floor was open. Reflection, discussion, and unbridled conversation followed. When the right people are in the same space at the same time, magic happens.

joi hosts salons and cultural experiences for women across New York, invite-only and intentionally intimate. This one found its home at Lightning Society.
