When you want a short skill practice that still feels like play, ABCya is the easy click.

Go to abcya.com, pick your child's grade (Pre-K, Kindergarten, Grade 1, and up through 6+), then tap Letters or Numbers. For littles, try Alphabet BINGO under Letters, or Fuzz Bugs Patterns under Numbers. Both are made for about preschool through early elementary. You don't need an account to start on the website.

You'll see ads on the free site, and there's a paid plan if you want them gone. Skip the upsell and just play one game.

After Fuzz Bugs, ask them to clap the pattern they just built before they click the next bug.

If your little one can't read yet, they can still start coding this week.

Go to code.org (it calls itself CodeAI now), click Students, then Learning for Ages 5 to 11, and pick CS Fundamentals: Pre-reader Express. The first lesson just teaches them to drag and drop. After that they're snapping picture blocks together to get Scrat to his acorn and move an Angry Bird through a maze. It's free, and you don't need an account to start.

It's listed for kindergarten through 3rd grade, so it really does fit the little ones. Sit beside them for the first few puzzles and ask "what do you think will happen?" before they try their blocks.

Science can be tricky if you are short on the right supplies. Here is a tool that lets you complete all sorts of simulations for free.

PhET Interactive Simulations is free. Go to phet.colorado.edu, filter for Elementary School, and open one sim in the browser.

No kit. No account for the basic ones. They can play with things fractions, magnets, or even balloons and static electricity.

When you’re out of experiment items this can easily be the whole science block for the day.

I used to shrug and say “some kind of plant” on every walk.

Seek by iNaturalist is a free app. Open it, point the camera at a leaf, a bug, or a mushroom, and it tries to name what you’re looking at.

You don’t need an account for the basic ID. If badges help your kid keep looking, those are there too.

We pick one find, write the name in a notebook, and call that nature study for the day.

I didn’t know our library had a second card for teaching until someone mentioned it at the desk.

A lot of systems offer an educator or homeschool card — longer loans, higher checkout limits, sometimes only for school materials. Ask your branch what they call it and what proof they need. Often it’s a notice of intent or similar paperwork.

We keep unit books on that card so we’re not racing the regular three-week clock.

I keep forgetting this is free until I’m scrambling for a unit.

Core Knowledge puts full curriculum PDFs on their site. Go to coreknowledge.org, open Download Free Curriculum, pick a subject and a grade, and download the unit.

I print the pages the kids write on this week and leave the teacher guide on my laptop. Way less paper than printing the whole thing.

A week gets heavy when every subject has its own plan.

One list often does more. What must happen. What can wait. What is already done.

A hare, and nothing else. Dürer needed no landscape to make the animal sit here with you.

Notice how the fur changes direction at the shoulder, and how the whiskers are barely there. The ears do not match: one is a little more open, a little more turned.

What might the hare have heard? Look long enough to have a reason.

A sudden rain, and everyone on the bridge becomes a small, hurrying shape.

Hiroshige cut this from wood in 1857: hundreds of thin lines for weather, a few spare marks for hats and backs. Notice how the sky goes nearly black at the top, then thins as it meets the river.

A closer look at the rain: do the lines fall straight, or do they lean? What does that tell you about the wind?

Some pictures hold still. This one does not.

Van Gogh painted this wheat at Saint-Rémy, and every stroke seems to lean. Notice the cypress: a dark, narrow flame that keeps the field from blowing away.

If you look a little longer, which way is the wind traveling — and what in the picture tells you so?
