Grateful for @viewss.danceco for creating a space where I can share one of my first loves - ballet 🩰

The Dying Swan is one of the most iconic ballet solos, first performed in 1905. While not very technically complex, it demands deep artistry and emotion - capturing the fragility of life and the quiet strength in holding on until the end. 🦢

These days in Chicago, I’ve been training in other dance styles, but ballet will always be my foundation of my love for the arts. Performing this piece is super meaningful- it brings back memories of my Mom taking me to rehearsals/classes and reminds me of Papa C (I miss him so much 😭😭) who first introduced me to this song…🤍

Introducing Alexa Calingo (she/her). Alexa is a Filipina-American dancer and runner. She is a trained ballerina but more recently she has been dabbling in hip hop, commercial jazz, heels and salsa. Growing up, she would get quizzical looks when she said dance is her sport. Make no mistake, dancers are athletes! She also runs because it’s a sport her late father participated in. Running gives her moments of reflection and also allows her to practice breathing as an asthmatic runner. Her favorite running memory was finishing her first half last year at the BoA 13.1 because it took place days before what would have been her father’s 66th birthday. Through tears and seeing cheering faces, crossing that finish line was special and emotional. This year, she will be running that race again with the goal to PR!

Welcome to ‘Family Legacy’! The Family Legacy series is meant to highlight FSRC’s family and the Legacy they hope to leave behind. Through this series we will highlight their cultural background, their history with sports & athletics, what sport or their culture has taught them, and some of their 2023 goals. FSRC believes everyone is capable of being an athlete and an athlete can come in many forms. Which is why ‘Family Legacy’ means so much to us. Representation Matters. Family Style RC is so much more than a “Run Club”, RC also stands for all the love and support in the Run Community, we are Rooted in Community, with Richness in Cultures, and it all started Right here in Chicago.

🚨If you ever need a cheerleader in your life, Alexa is your people motivator! Now, it’s our turn to cheer Alexa on as she prepares to race the Shamrock Shuffle this weekend and the Chicago 13.1 in June! Please comment below and share any half marathon tips you have for Alexa! If anything said here resonates with you or Alexa has inspired you somehow, share with her and share her story. Let’s give Alexa her flowers and share her legacy!

Five years since you left us, and somehow it feels both so long ago and like no time at all.

So many happy things have happened, especially lately. I’m so grateful for all the beautiful things happening in our lives, but also sad you’re not here to experience them alongside us.

Missing you and praying for you always, Papa C. 🙏🏼
