Having a strong love for dogs is NOT enough to become a dog sitter! There is so much more you need to know. Here are 4 things I wish every person knew before becoming a dog sitter: 1.Things won’t always go as planned. A dog might refuse to walk or eat, panic when you leave, or suddenly become uncomfortable with their collar or harness. You need to know how to respond thoughtfully and prioritize safety. 2. Not every dog is going to love you. Some dogs are nervous around new people, some need time to build trust, and others might try to keep their distance. Knowing how to approach these dogs respectfully is an important skill! 3. Understanding dog body language and understanding WHY a dog is behaving a certain way can make a huge difference in the care you provide. 4. There’s a BUSINESS side to dog sitting. Finding clients, setting your rates, creating policies, communicating professionally, and managing your schedule are all part of running a successful pet sitting business. I had to figure things out all by myself through trial and error but you don’t have to! I’m helping aspiring and current sitters build their skills and businesses through my ✨Stellar Sitter Certification Course! ✨ GET THE PRESALE! If you’re ready to turn your love of dogs into something more, comment SSC and I’ll send you the link to get $100 off! When I started my dog sitting business, I never imagined it would lead to clients who trust me so much that they ask me to TRAVEL with their dogs. But that’s what can happen when you build relationships with clients and provide exceptional care. I left my corporate job to work with dogs, and this year I’ve made over half a million in revenue. So if you’re sitting at your desk wishing you could spend your days with dogs instead…this is your sign!!! You don’t have to stay in a job you don’t love just because you can’t imagine another option. You can build a career around something you love! Comment SSC if you’re interested in my new course where I give you the exact steps on growing a dog sitting business! #dogsitting #dogsitter #dogwalker #dogsittingbusiness how to start your own dog sitting business by @likeliterallylauren
Dog sitters, we need to talk about FREE meet & greets… I charge for my meet & greets, and I recommend that other dog sitters consider doing the same. Here’s why. Your time is valuable. PERIOD. When you’re running a dog sitting business, a meet & greet isn’t just a quick hello. It can mean commuting to someone’s home, working around their schedule, meeting their pets, discussing their needs, answering questions, and spending time figuring out whether you’re the right fit. And if you’re doing all of that for free, over and over again, that time adds up FAST. Time you could be spending caring for paying clients, growing your business, or, ya know, having a life outside of work! Here’s how I look at it: ⚡️Your time is part of your business. Do not just charge for the time you spend physically caring for a pet. ⚡️Clients who are willing to invest for a meet and greet is a sign that they’re serious about finding the right care for their pet. ⚡️You can always do a complimentary virtual session or phone call! But once you’re commuting across town and going into someone’s home? That’s a different level of time and commitment. And I believe that deserves compensation. You’re building a business, not volunteering your time in the hopes that someone might eventually book you. ‼️ You can be an amazing, caring dog sitter AND run a business with boundaries. I am sharing everything I know about running a dog sitting business in my soon-to-launch course: The Stellar Sitter Certification Course! No but actually when did they go from drab to fab?!? It should be studied. #entrepreneur #femalefounder #motivation by @likeliterallylauren
PLEASE learn this before taking on your first dog sitting client ⬇️ Learn how to read dog body language!!! I know, I know. You’re thinking, “I love dogs! I’ve had dogs my whole life! How hard can it be?” But here’s the thing… Not every dog is going to run up to you with a wagging tail, happily go on a walk, or let you clip on their leash without a second thought. Some dogs are nervous around new people. Some are anxious when their humans leave. Some struggle with leash reactivity. Others might freeze, growl, or try to move away when you reach for their harness. And if you don’t understand what that dog is communicating, it’s easy to miss signs of stress or accidentally push them past their comfort zone. Skills I wish more dog sitters had: -recognizing signs of fear, stress, and discomfort -knowing when a dog needs space -knowing how to change your approach depending on the dog’s behaviors These skills not only make you an EXCELLENT sitter but it’s going to help you provide safer, more thoughtful pet care! This is a huge part of why I’m creating my Stellar Sitter Certification Course: to help aspiring and current sitters build the skills and confidence to provide exceptional care. Because loving dogs is a great place to start. Learning how to understand them is what takes your care to the next level 😎 Follow along for more tips on becoming a ✨stellar✨ dog sitter! #dogmom #dogsitter #doglover #dogsitting #petsitterlife how to start a dog sitting business by @likeliterallylauren
To anyone who wants to start a dog sitting business, please remember building a business isn’t just about making money. It’s about creating a life you actually LOVE. And for me, that meant building a dog sitting business that didn’t depend on me doing everything myself. I wanted to be able to take vacations, spend time with the people I love, make memories, and enjoy the life I was working so hard to build. That meant learning how to build a team, create systems, train people to provide amazing care, and set my business up to run even when I wasn’t there. Because I didn’t leave corporate just to create another job that owned my life 😂 I wanted freedom. Flexibility. And the ability to build something meaningful without sacrificing everything else that makes life beautiful. And YES, you can build a dog sitting business that gives you that, too. It takes work, strategy, and a whole lot of learning, but you don’t have to stay a one-person operation forever. If you’re dreaming about becoming a dog sitter or building your own pet care business, let this be your reminder that you’re allowed to build a business around the LIFE you want to live!!! That’s a big part of what I’m teaching inside my Stellar Sitter Certification Course, from providing exceptional pet care to building a business that can grow with you. ⬇️3 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BECOMING A DOG SITTER⬇️ Everyone loves the idea of getting paid to hang out with dogs but no one realizes that that not every dog is easy to care for! Here are 3 things every aspiring dog sitter must understand: 1. Not every dog is going to be friendly, confident, or easygoing. Some dogs are anxious around new people. Some are reactive on walks. Some are nervous about being handled, having their harness put on, or even having someone enter their home. And that’s okay! But you need to know how to recognize what a dog is communicating and adjust your approach to help them feel safe. 2. Loving dogs doesn’t automatically mean you know how to handle them. You can LOVE dogs and still not know what to do when a dog freezes on a walk, growls when you reach for their collar, or barks and lunges at another dog. Understanding body language, recognizing stress, and knowing when to give a dog space are skills you need to learn. And those skills can make a HUGE difference in your care. 3. You need to know what to do when things don’t go as planned. What happens when a dog refuses to go outside? When they won’t let you put on their harness? When they react in a way you’ve never seen before? Being a great sitter isn’t about knowing exactly what to do in every situation. It’s about knowing how to respond thoughtfully while prioritizing safety. What separates someone who loves dogs from a truly skilled professional is the ability to provide care that goes beyond keeping a dog fed and walked. These are just some of the things I’ll cover inside my Stellar Sitter Certification Course! So that other aspiring or sitters can have the resources to gain the skills and knowledge to care for a wider variety of dogs! If I had to start my dog sitting business from scratch, here’s EXACTLY what I’d do… And no, I wouldn’t start by spending thousands on a website, ordering business cards, or obsessing over my logo (ok slight obsession with logo is okay because branding is everythinggg lol!) But here’s where I’d actually focus: 1. I’d figure out WHAT makes me different. There are plenty of people who walk dogs and feed cats. What can YOU offer that makes someone want to hire you specifically? Don’t just think about what services you can offer. Think about what PROBLEMS you can help SOLVE. 2. I’d get my business basics in place. Not going to lie, this took me a long time to figure out so I’d seriously prioritize this. Before taking on a bunch of clients, I’d establish my rates, service agreement, policies, emergency procedures, insurance, and booking/payment systems. You don’t need a fancy business empire on day one. But you DO need a solid foundation. 3. I’d stop thinking of myself as “just a dog sitter.” Because you can be so much more. Think of yourself as building a professional service business. There are opportunities to specialize and create services clients can’t easily find elsewhere. I’ve landed opportunities like caring for a dog at a wedding because my business offers more than standard pet sitting. 4. I’d invest in learning from people who have actually done it so I don’t have to figure everything out by myself. Honestly, if I could go back, I’d want a roadmap that helped me avoid unnecessary mistakes and build my skills from the beginning. If you’re new here, hey I’m Lauren! I left my corporate job to work with dogs, and I eventually grew my pet care business to $500k+. If starting a pet sitting business is on your mind, save this post!
