nothing makes me feel more at peace than these two tables seaside in Croatia 💙

photo 1: mom’s side; morning sun piercing through the balcony curtains and winding down spiraled stairs. Deda (grandpa) blinks through the slits of vines, like my shuttered morning eyes. with attention/without rush, he migrates everything from the fridge onto the table even though mom keeps saying *dosta*, it’s enough, it’s plenty. he slices into a hot pepper with a tremble so steady it becomes a hum.

photo 2: dad’s side; eyes heavy and cheeks hot again, this time from the collective daily nap. little Ejla wakes me up, and I comply for the expectance of something syrupy sweet or dripping with juice. ice cream for her. coffee simmering until it foams. let the grounds nestle at the bottom of the cup and let green beans settle into their piles too. by @lil_let_

Gušt (savor) is what we hope you do. Some lemons are soaking in salt, dried meats schlepped from astoria are waiting in the fridge, I’ll be making ajvar (roasted red pepper spread) with my dad this weekend, Renee is going to pickle some turnips and bake ka’ak (crackers). We’ll be wrapping probably 100 little edible gifts to nourish you like all the women did before us. The stories & flavors of Syria and the Balkans are melding, seamlessly deliciously splendidly. come , sit , eat … تفضل (tffadal)!
