My Dad taught me the real meaning of practice makes perfect.

He would practice free throws and layups with me until the sun went down, multiplication until we ran out of paper, hair braiding until I didn’t even need a hair tie.
My Dad was one of those annoying people who could just be great at everything so easily and immediately. I was hardheaded and needed to practice to be even okay. He practiced with me tying my shoes over & over until I got it down. Reminded me over and over to tie them.
This track meet, even though I practiced running, I was hardheaded and didn’t tie my shoes properly, and in the race they flew off.
I was humiliated and defeated. He didn’t mention he had warned me to tie them. Didn’t say anything about me coming in last. Just told me I did a good job, and distracted me.
More recently, he absolutely whopped me in pool and didn’t make fun of how shockingly bad I was.

Now my Dad cracked (the best) jokes, never let me live down the funniest flops, and still called me the name from when I was a kid designated for when I stayed up too late & turned into a baby demon: Lulu.
He didn’t go easy on me. But never ever made me feel dumb or like a failure.

I don’t know if I’ve ever experienced that kind of unconditional love elsewhere in life, I don’t think many people do, and I doubt I ever will again.

I would have done anything to keep my Dad & his bright warm heart near me forever.
But I was pretty lucky to have him while I did.

Everyone has got some giant, stylin perfectly coordinated, shoes to fill.

There aren’t a lot of photos from the last year.
This is my favourite.
We’re so happy.
I’m so happy because we’re celebrating my brother (& beautiful Katasha’s) awesome new album. And my sister told me minutes earlier that a show she wrote got greenlit.
There is nothing like seeing the something created out of nothing from talented people.
For me being proud of someone feels better than accomplishing something myself.
I know my Dad was the same. I cannot imagine how excited and proud he is for these two.
That I got from him.
Something I didn’t get from him but both my siblings did was not only the uncanny ability to just be very good at everything, a trait I guess they were in low supply of when it came to me like curls… and height, but also just like my Dad, they epitomize moving in silence.

They work, create, and accomplish wild stuff on their own, unbraggadociously, without needing help and really only letting the world know when the something special they made out of nothing is real.

I wish more than 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 my Dad was here to tell them how proud he is of them, and joke as if he wasn’t the one who taught them exactly how to not just be great at everything, but create greatness authentically and without influence. by @lili.sd

Never thought to even wish for a birthday where my brother doesn’t have to rush out of town soon after because even short trips were more than worth it, but I did wish my dog would live to my birthday, and both coming true are the greatest gifts I could dream for📆💜📅 by @lili.sd

Today is Cape Verde Independence Day
Unlike these countries with a quarter millennia of independence, Cabo Verde got ours in 1975

Not independence for fair representation for taxation, Cape Verde like all of Africa, fought for independence from oppressive colonial rule.

People laugh at my initials, LSD, but long before I even knew the connotation around these letters, my lastnames meant so much to me.

Some in Canada know what Smallwood means for Newfoundland freedom from a different type of colonial rule. But da Graça means so much to me for reasons few were taught.

I’m often asked why Africans have a Portuguese lastname. Remnants of colonialism. Colonialism I didn’t experience but my relatives did, & Cape Verdeans led by Amílcar Cabral, & the people of Guinea Bissau, fought for freedom from.

I’m proud to know people who were given every strategic hurdle in life fought for me and everyone like me to live free.

The ‘unborn’ Cabral spoke of fighting for is me.

My initials are silly but every time I get to talk about the 2 sides of me, 2 people from tiny islands (Newfoundland & São Vincente) set up to fail for generations, but fought battles before I existed for the privileged life I live, I am so proud.

I never let up (am annoying) about the impact of colonialism cos in the west too often we know nothing of the comforts, directly from centuries of colonialism in Africa, resource theft, down to strategically disadvantageous geographical lines drawn by colonizers to ensure resource reliance, structured inability for self sufficiency, survival & yes, no independence African nations could reasonably attain.

My Dad would have been 65 today.

With how many people we love are up there, I know he’s having the greatest heavenly birthday.

But I’m not evolved, mature, or graceful enough to say I wish he weren’t having it here.

I won’t pretend every day I don’t wish there was some time machine or magic trick I could pull to bring him back, or a reality in which he still was here.
A reality in which he could have reached the age of retirement and actually got to enjoy the rest and relaxation of retirement.
I wish there were a reality in which society wasn’t set up in a way that far too many Black people never get to enjoy the relaxation they earned, or retirement funds they paid into their whole lives, get to be celebrated for a life time of hard work and enjoy the simple things like a retirement party because they actually make it to 65.

I’m not evolved, mature, or graceful enough to not be quietly mad and sad every day, but today especially.

I’m more than lucky I have so many strong memories of joy, acceptance, and love with my Dad remind myself of who he was to the world, and to me.

But I wish more than anything I could take him to a game for his birthday and listen to him muttering about the sorry Pistons, or just congratulate him for the hard work he did to give us a childhood better than the world intended and see him enjoy the retirement he earned.

I just wish he was here. And hope everyone up there is throwing the party he deserves. by @lili.sd
