I’m still in a bit of denial that our vacation to Maine is over and that we’ve been back in the real world for almost a week. I had so much fun at the beach, and being touristy at all the gift shops and seafood restaurants in southern Maine.

I picked up #MurderLikeMagic from a bookstore in Salem, Mass., because it was witchy and the cover reminded me of the mills in my hometown of Lowell. Imagine my surprise when I started reading and realized the book was actually a fictionalized version of the city! Even seemingly insignificant details, like the descriptions of the Merrimack River and the local university, along with the location of the humane society at a V-shaped intersection, painted such an accurate picture of Lowell that I felt like I was right there solving the mystery alongside Tess. This book was so much fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Here’s hoping there’s another Mill City Investigations book on the horizon! by @liljenreads

I bought this book at @octopus_bookshop_kennebunk while in Maine this summer. It’s a middle grade book, but I wanted to read it myself because it looked cute and I love a cozy mystery. My son was like, “isn’t that book a little young for you?” (Because that’s all he hears - that books HE likes are “too young” for him to be reading). Why are we shaming people for their choice in reading material?! Can we please normalize reading whatever we want, regardless of age level? Reading is reading, and a book doesn’t have to have a lot of big words and grandiose ideas to be entertaining and educational. We need to teach kids to enjoy reading things that interest them so they grow up to love reading. If you ask me (and of course you didn’t), this is what’s caused the literacy crisis in the first place - trying to force kids to read what we think they *should* read instead of letting them find what they *want* to read. So I’ll continue to read the books on my son’s shelves if for no other reason than to show him that reading level doesn’t matter; finding the right book for me does. (Oh and he just started reading this one yesterday and so far, he’s enjoying it. Can’t wait til he’s done and we can discuss!) by @liljenreads

It’s officially fall - my favorite time of year - so I spent the morning digging out all my Halloween decor and bringing some whimsy to my bookcase. I think I earned a cup of coffee in my favorite đŸ‘» mug.

Anyone else read overly hyped books and feel insanely let down by them? I spent the first 2/3 of this book absolutely HATING the protagonist. Like, she was the meanest person masquerading as a “good Christian woman” and literally everything she said (and thought) rubbed me the wrong way. I found it super hard to get into it for just that reason. With that said, the more I read, the more I got into it, but I wasn’t really satisfied by that ending. Am I glad I read it? Still undecided. My rating: 3 ⭐

I first read Ground Zero by Alan Gratz with my son for Battle of the Books last year and I sobbed my way through it. I was a senior in high school when 9/11 happened. We were in English class reading Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales when we heard the news and our lives changed forever.

The pilot of the first plane, Capt. John Ogonowski, was a farmer in my hometown and we felt the devastating loss of that day firsthand. 25 years later and we still feel it.

Ground Zero gave me a chance to talk to my son, himself a fan of history, about that day and what it meant. He asked questions. We watched videos. We talked about its lasting impact. We’ll Never Forget that day or the people who were lost.

Sending our love to everyone who was touched by 9/11. by @liljenreads

NEW ACHIEVEMENT! You’ve finished book 8

Congratulations, crawler. Against all odds, you have successfully consumed all 8 books of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

REWARD: An overwhelming sense of loss, because apparently eight books was not nearly enough.

Oh my gosh, what a wild ride this series was. Easily one of top favorite series of all time.

I did an immersive read of this one listening to the audio narrated by Jeff Hays but reading along with my Kindle.

Have you read or listened to Dungeon Crawler Carl?

Does it count as book mail if it wasn’t packaged and sent but instead dropped off by my mail carrier friend? I think so. Can’t wait to dive into Whistler when I finish Dungeon Crawler Carl. I hear I should have tissues ready
I’ve never read anything by Ann Patchett before so I have high hopes for this one.

If I can give one piece of advice to my younger self, it would be not to work through every lunch break. Trying to prove myself at my job by eating a quick lunch at my desk (or not eating at all) did nothing for me except contribute to incredible burnout. Today, my favorite part of my workday is my lunch break when I can take an hour for myself mid-day to eat and read and just focus my mind on anything but work. Work-life balance is important. Today’s reading selection? Last month’s @bookofthemonth pick. by @liljenreads
