The act of making ayaka, transmitted through generations, functions as a living vessel of cultural memory, a way of preserving history while reaffirming a sense of belonging.

Each step in its preparation carries traces of the past, embodying the stories, skills, and values of those who came before.

From 18 till 26 of October, 𝘼𝙮𝙖𝙠𝙖, 𝙖 𝙁𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙃𝙚𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙢 will be on view at @dutchdesignweek 🫔 (📍 Microstad)

This project has been brewing for the past two years. shaping, shifting, growing, and now it’s finally ready to be shared with you.

𝘼𝙮𝙖𝙠𝙖, 𝙖 𝙁𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙃𝙚𝙞𝙧𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙢 explores the interplay between survival and preservation within diasporic cultural practices, using the traditional dish 𝘈𝘺𝘢𝘬𝘢 as both subject and metaphor. It reflects on how creolization and transformation are integral to survival. Rather than resisting change, the work embraces the evolution of tradition, questioning whether something constantly shifting can truly be preserved.

What began as a personal reflection now becomes a shared space for memory, change, and belonging. Hope to see you there. 💚

Meet Lilly Alexandra (@lillyalexxandra) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores memory, cultural identity, and the layered spaces of belonging. ⁠

Drawing from a personal archive of photographs, sounds, and memories, Lilly makes intangible memories and oral histories tangible. This allows viewers to step into spaces of remembrance and reflection, where adaptation, preservation, and longing quietly intertwine. ⁠
