One month ago today, my sweet grandmother, Judy Mae Smith Johnson, passed away. Today would’ve been her 80th birthday, and it’s hard to believe I’m not celebrating it with her.

Those who are really close to me know Meemaw was truly one of my best friends and a guiding light in my life. Her name in mine and my sister’s phones was always “Bestie” — because she was just that. The person we went to to talk through the good and the bad.

She was the one who drove me to sectionals when I needed a ride, who FaceTimed me every night in middle school to work through my vocabulary book with me, who talked me through course options when I got to college and felt overwhelmed by all the choices. Through it all, she was the heart of my beautiful family — every Thanksgiving, peeling potatoes together at the kitchen table, where she taught us a good knife always beats a peeler, and you can never, ever have enough pepper. I would be nowhere near where I am today without her love and support.

Five-year-old me dreamed of twirling for a big school with a big band. But she never could have imagined the incredible people I’d meet or the family I’d find along the way. This band gave me some of my very best friends and so many people who have shaped who I am today. To everyone who supported me, twirled alongside me, and shared this dream with me—thank you from the bottom of my heart. Call me naive, but I never wanted to believe this day would come. To the employees and families in which I have had the pleasure to get to know, I can’t thank you enough. I hope to continue to cry, laugh, and hug you all again so soon.

I cannot even begin to describe the whirlwind of a season it has been. To Tay, Alconn, and Miha, thank you for making the past three years of UMass twirling feel complete. Miss Lea and I will be looking for you in the stands next year, don’t you worry.❤️
