My #TEDxOakland talk hit over 1k+ views & with a topic before the pandemic that still so relevant & even more now especially with all the #AI & automation buzz going mainstream with large language models like ChatGPT having over 1M users in first 5 days of launch and now 25M of daily users: Responsible Technology. Just because we can build it should we? Just because we can scale it should we?

On one hand we still have millions of families not connected to internet & low digital skills and on the other hand tech engineers launching thousands of new GPT4 related business applications daily - my concern continued to grow given widening digital skills divide, ethical & privacy concerns, reinforced biases, job displacement, economic inequality use cases. To innovate & reduce harm, centering equity is critical to avoid accelerated bifurcation of opportunities & wages. This new age of tech & automation is unavoidable - we’re already in the midst of the tsunami. Our elected officials & any one looking to be in public service need to urgently understand tech policy to be effective & provide critical policies. If not it’s a disservice to millions of families & workers. We are where we are by lack of accountability & enforcement in the private & public sector. We don’t have time to be on the defense, we gotta be on the offense - by leveraging our lived journeys x creativity x purpose x tech to help build a truly better future. We can’t afford to be on the sidelines. Hope I get to share what’s on the other side of the tsunami - of a more leveled playing field, a more inclusive future of dignified work, valued based co-creation that doesn’t displace but rather invests - one day on the main @ted stage.

This first quarter of 2026 was a challenging one but learning to give myself grace through it all! With all that’s going on globally, nationally, and in communities, I’m always thinking how can I do more to be of service. But part of service is also making sure one takes care of oneself. 🤠👢🎼💻🎧 #SxSW is always an adventure! After many years attending (since 2014), I believe we may have genuinely turned a new corner. The convergence across disciplines including tech, film, music, culture, policy, and beyond, felt more intertwined than in the past. With 91+ sessions discussing #AI across verticals, the real standout wasn’t the tech itself. It was the people: critics, builders, storytellers, investors, and organizers from different backgrounds, regions, and expertise, showing up IRL to dialogue, challenge, and create better together in a time where people to people connection is more & more important to protect:
A few moments that stayed with me:
💡 Rethinking capital & who innovation serves — Alongside Omidyar Network NAACP Capital SomosVC Kapor Foundation during our official SxSw panel, we dug into how capital can and should be structured differently to avoid reinforcing harm or inequity, to measure ROI in community outcomes and public good, not only financial returns, and to expand who defines innovation and who profits from it with specific call ins to foundations & institutional investors. It was a packed room with lots of post session follow ups showing demand to democratize knowledge & opportunities.
🌟 A resilient ecosystem centering coalition building:
* ON’s Lighthouse brought two days of inspiring programming spanning tech organizing,AI ethics, expanding capital stack, & continued critical role of journalism and multidisciplinary community building & supports.
* Reconnected with Latine founders and investors across the US at the Vamos Ventures dinner discussing how community building in action must continue and center more responsible tech that serves, empowers but doesn’t harm our own communities. Lots of energy for advocacy!
* A dinner with education and workforce funders exploring more collaborative approaches to supporting a just, city-by-city transition in learning and careers, exploring intra & entrepreneurial learning as automation increases in key sectors.
* Serendipitously (re)connecting with so many fun folks across the US & globally! Was exciting to meet & chat with @steven @DAOC ! One of my fav podcasters! by @lilsdaexplorer

“Together, we are America”
Still feeling all the feels from Bad Bunny’s halftime performance- that early numbers estimate broke another record - with 135M+ people watching! I cried, I danced, I cheered, I sang alongside community taking in all the cultural references that united so many.

In #Oakland where the Latine community represents close to 29% of residents we celebrated together alongside our Mayor who recently passed Executive Orders to protect our immigrant communities; uplifting frontline orgs like @the_unity_council The Unity Council who for decades have been the backbone of the most in need from the babies to the abuelitas!

Love is the answer not only in these times but always as Bad Bunny loudly reminded us. For me it starts with loving where you come from, honoring your ancestors, and owning what you represent in all its complexity, strength, and with authenticity to build an inclusive future.

Bad Bunny united millions across the world through 13 mins of purposeful artistry as a forever love letter to us all. And now the world gets to see and appreciate the multi-cultural, multi-generational, multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-dimensional of what being Latine in America represents in this moment and for generations to come - Aqui estamos y no nos vamos! Living in our power fueled by love, not hate!

As 2026 is here, I reflected on the past year marked by real threats/harms to our democracy, freedoms, and shared humanity. I kept returning to a grounding principle to take into this new year: focus where you can drive the most direct impact. For me, that means prioritizing key leverage points to connect people, resources, policy, and supports. Highlights of past year include:

1️⃣ Deepening funder collaborations From rapid response efforts for partners working on digital & civil rights to convening 20+ partners mid-year was a humbling yet powerful reminder of both the scale of the challenge and the strength of working collectively. Part of #HumanityAI Fund ($500M multi funder collaboration) steering committee to inform strategy.

2️⃣ Doubling down on local/state tech policy My travels quickly shifted from flights to DC to flights to CA. Key resource was our inaugural CA Legislative Tech Policy Landscape to improve community fluency and alignment across AI, data governance, worker protections, and infrastructure and supporting coalition partners who do the day to day organizing. I’m especially committed to ongoing work with NAACP on data centers oversight. Data centers are at a critical point of leverage in AI governance intersecting land use, water, energy, environment, and local economies. Organizing across issues creates the time and space needed to build public-interest guardrails.

3️⃣ Revitalizing Oakland as an inclusive innovation hub Years of community-building came together in meaningful ways. Alongside partners City of Oakland HiiiWAV Northeastern University - Oakland, Oakland Innovation Coalition was launched and co-created the first Oakland Tech Week that reached 4K+, launched 7 new initiatives, and received the Mayor’s Proclamation; informed Oakland’s AI Economic Development Plan and AI Economic Zone legislation. For 2026, doubling down on aligning capital, talent, creativity, and policy.

4️⃣ Latine perspectives for nuanced tech advocacy strategies with affirmative visions that empower our communities beyond just AI literacy across nonprofit, policy, investment, and philanthropic ecosystems.
