Last scenes from Sweden☺️

1-2) our first days of rehearsal!
3) maybe one of my favorite moments of the entire festival. Our last show was almost rained out, but we decided to start it anyways and stop only if it became too wet. We all danced the entire performance with complete abandon, thinking it would end at any moment…gazing at the tempestuous sky mid-lift, and catching a few drops of rain on my face was something I will never forget.

7) I kept seeing swans on our way to the island the morning of the shows. They felt like good luck talismans!
8) teaching class on our first day onstage
9-10) more rehearsal
11) little cat that kept us company in our dressing room
12) introducing Stockholm to the Indigo Girls over the weekend
13) writing in the studio
14) disbelief at the sun rising… at 3am
15) tail end of a tiring 32 hops—but much more fun out among the trees

The joy of the past few weeks has been the culmination of more than a year of work between Emma and myself, our first formative experiences assuming leadership roles, and an outlet for artistic and personal ambitions, frustrations, and ideas. But, more than anything, it’s been a shared childhood dream come to fruition.

There are so many people to thank. Firstly, the entire community of Grinda has pitched in to a touching degree. Notably, Jan and Jonas have supported our vision for the past 9 months, & so kindly integrated us into the Stockholm archipelago’s summer offerings. It has been a pleasure to perform on this beautiful island… and we can’t wait for more❤️

There are many whose roles don’t fit into neat categories but have made indelible contributions: Darcy’s tireless work designing, supporting, music operating, coming-up-with-solutions-ing, Sophia for inimitable organization and clear headedness, and Jack for a constant stream of encouragement, plus fabulous, hungrily devoured meals for 12. The entire Wheeler and Peta family joyfully embraced the twists and turns of our endeavors, notably cutting nearly 2,000 pieces of foam as we built a sprung floor from scratch. We lucked out with a lovely group of dancers who were game for anything (and an extra shoutout to Alex, for being a diligent and ever kind partner!) More thanks are in order to Oskar for a thoughtfully crafted score, Anna for graciously granting us her glorious piece Quartet (and for her expert coaching!) Caterina for masterful work documenting the process and performances…and many more, but to all, thank you!

But lastly and most importantly: Emma, my best friend, who I admire fiercely and love wholly, has made every minute of the very many minutes we spent working on Midsommar hilarious, joyful, and empowering. Ultimately, I see MD as an embodiment of the richest friendship I know; playful, collaborative, and always loving.

Happy birthday to a remarkably great friend, who, by objective measures, is one of the most wholeheartedly wonderful people in the world (truly, Nat puts the rest of us to shame.) Through thick and thin; impaled hands, the beloved stint in Detroit, traipsing through Danish winter, the great tutu swap 🦢, onstage falls & charley horses, there really hasn’t been a challenge we haven’t laughed through together❤️❤️May all the joy you give to others be given back to you this year! Our graceful, infamously beautiful, ever caring Lulu is 20 today. It has been a gift, in knowing you, to learn to see the world through your eyes; keenly attentive to beauty, to the needs of your loved ones, & to casual opportunities for joy.
