57 seconds of challah therapy: l’shana tova 🍯 sweetness & freedom for all, for all, for all. Hot tips:
• I use @mollyyeh’s challah recipe with some @adeenasussman long-rise + turmeric flair
• I find a tic-tac-toe–style round form easiest (all year cuz it’s pretty, too)
• for serious fluff, my first rise usually needs much longer than directed, second rise can benefit from longer too (but you risk over-proofing and deflation—watch out! this one was on the edge)
• there’s no wrong answer when flour, yeast, honey, butter, and salt are involved
• a thermometer is your friend (interior should be 190°F when it’s done)
• I’ve baked a lot of challah but this was my first time doing it on a pizza stone. I put the stone in at the same time as the loaf and it kept the bottom of the challah from getting crisp, so if a soft loaf is what you’re after, consider a baking surface that’s thicker than stainless steel / metal. by @lilydiamond

The summer my mom’s thirty-year old rose bush said YES I WILL YES.

@scarlet.garn created the most exquisite saffron cardamom olive oil cake, topped with orange blossom whipped mascarpone, nectarines, pistachios & rosemary blossoms CAN YOU EVEN.

Mom’s orange flaming tea roses also made a comeback.

Chopped but if you have to decorate a cake in 3 minutes flat with your bestie @rachelihilaniberman.

Ha’ikū tangerine cream pie with whipped yogurt cloud and lokelani rose petals. I use @alisoneroman’s key lime pie recipe as a base for all citrus pie endeavors.

Did I mention the cherries this summer were divine? Compote for Black Forest cake, recipe riffed from @samanthaseneviratne @nytcooking.

Climate Crisis ~ Polycrisis Mental Health PSA: In the aftermath of Hurricane Lala here on Maui and in Hawai’i, I’m talking to a lot of friends and farmers who are feeling hopeless, overwhelmed, despairing. I get it. Many were just coming out from the devastation of this spring’s Kona Low storms, or even the wreckage of the 2023 Upcountry and Lahaina fires. If you’re feeling anxious, depressed, sorrowful, or helpless…please don’t ignore it — take the time to help yourself and tend to your nervous system, too. Here on Maui, you can go to MauiRecovers.org and click the mental health tab. If you have health insurance, use it. Climate crisis isn’t just about damage to land and structures and systems and physical health — it takes a huge toll on our mental health, our hearts and minds, our capacity to feel resilient and hopeful. This grief is normal. We’re all together in it. Please share any resources you have below. Sending love and solidarity.

Hurricane Lala took so many ancient tree ancestors. We are in shock, mourning these magnificent beings who taught, sheltered, fed, and delighted us, who were home to many other creatures, too. These trees raised me. I climbed and cried and played and grew beneath them. I learned to listen and tell time by attuning to the wind and the sun in their leaves. It is hard to conceive of this place and my heart without them, though I know—as Octavia Butler taught us—God is Change. We wanted to memorialize a few of the trees that came down, to honor and thank them before they are taken apart, to make remembering easier. Ultimately they will become mulch that feeds the soil again, still nurturing us from the ground up.

I want to share the names of the trees here: ‘inia, avocado (two different varieties, hybridized beyond naming), jacaranda, ‘ulu (ma’afala and ‘Ulu Maoli), pink guava. Each of them gave us so much. taken in Ulupalakua, Hawaii by @lilydiamond
