POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A chance encounter at a dumpster with humanity. This past Sunday I went surfing to wash off a particularly stress filled week. Driving out of the parking lot I noticed a man about my age dumpster diving for cans. His car was stacked with trash bags full of cans. I had a few empties in my car so I stopped and handed them to him. He smiled, thanked me - “Have a blessed and beautiful day brother…” The hair on my neck stood straight up. Goosebumps. Something in me was awakened. Rather than not engage I asked “what’s your story brother?” Most likely response - I’m too busy for you buddy. Move along. He stopped what he was doing, took off his work gloves, gently smiled, shook my hand. I’m Ricardo - I’m Brian nice to meet you dude.” The conversation that ensued profoundly restored my hope in humanity and the will to live. The sound bite attached to these images is just a snippet of the truths Ricardo shared with me. He’s a San Diego native, He’s a proud father, he’s a recovering addict, he’s homeless, He’s human. His story isn’t uncommon, his faith that he will survive and thrive unwavering. A lot of our conversation id selfishly rather keep between him and I. Cliff notes 🗒️: Things could be way worse• God is Good ( however you define that) • We all struggle from time to time • Be thankful • Be Grateful • new beginnings • blessed • don’t give up • be patient• have faith • love each other ✌🏽 thank you so much to Ricardo for taking the time out of your busy morning to left me up. 🤙🏽🙏🏽. #oceanbeachsandiego #sandiego #sunsetcliffs #oceanbeach #loveeachother taken in Ocean Beach, San Diego, California by @limaphoto

Photographer Brian Lima (@limaphoto) is offering his evocative Aquidneck Island print, “Paradise in Purgatory,” at a rare discount during his annual Labor Day sale.

Through Monday at midnight, collectors can receive 26% off the signed fine-art print, along with free shipping within the continental United States, by entering the code LABORDAY26 at checkout.

The photograph captures Purgatory Chasm, the dramatic coastal fissure carved into the rocks near Second Beach in Middletown. Shaped by glaciers and continually transformed by the sea, the landmark has inspired generations of local stories, including the legend of a man who attempted to leap across the divide while pursuing the woman he loved but never reached the other side.

Lima created the image during the summer of 2020, when he repeatedly swam into the chasm in search of the right combination of tide, light and timing.

“I spent weeks in the summer of 2020, in the middle of COVID, swimming back into this chasm over and over, chasing the one combination of tide, light, and time of day that would actually do it justice,” Lima said. “‘Paradise in Purgatory’ is what I came home with.”

For Lima, the photograph captures more than the geological drama of the location. It reflects a place deeply embedded in the collective memory of Aquidneck Island.

“There’s a kind of magic to it that’s hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t stood there,” he said. “The kind of place people carry with them whether they still live on the island or moved away years ago.”

Each print is made to order on archival-quality fine-art matte photographic paper and signed by Lima. It is available in three sizes, with framing offered upon request.

Lima places the work on sale only once each year. When the promotion ends Monday night, the print will return to full price until next September.

Offer: 26% off with free continental U.S. shipping
Promotional code: LABORDAY26
Deadline: Monday at midnight
Framing: Available upon request
Sales: Final
