A platform built to promote everyone else

He wanted the opposite, a platform that puts manufacturers, artists and newcomers forward instead, and he mentions recent conversations with a humble artist in Australia who is early in his career but already doing strong work, and another in Canada.

New video out now: Johnny of Spiver Canada on the Cold Joint Podcast

The full interview is live on the Lime Burned YouTube channel. Johnny started in construction in Italy at 14, found decorative plaster along the way, opened his showroom in Canada in 2020, trained with Spiver Italy and now distributes Spiver across Canada.

This is also the launch of the Cold Joint Podcast, a new extension of Lime Burned made to give artisans everywhere a seat at the table to share their craft, their knowledge and their story.

One wall, one memory from Venice, brought home

@michaelanjelos asks whether any single project changed how @royal.luxurywalls sees himself as an artist, not the biggest or priciest one, but the one that meant something. @royal.luxurywalls describes a couple in their seventies and eighties who saw high gloss Venetian plaster while travelling in Venice, then built a new house and, late in 2024, reached out through another company for a single wall in that finish.

The episode follows @royal.luxurywalls from his first contact with Venetian plaster through the craft itself and the work of building a business around it.

There are almost as many people from his hometown living in Toronto as there are back in Italy.

Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster was born in Toronto after his parents tried their luck in Canada. His dad was in the trades too, a tile setter working in marble, porcelain and ceramic.

By the early 1970s his father had opened his own tile store in the city. The trade runs in the family.

Trained with Texston 27 years ago, now leading its design

Texston's design director explains that she trained with @texstonindustries 27 years ago, went on to run a faux finishing and color consulting business that grew into interior design, and has now come back to where she started. She describes how the showroom has been reorganized, with samples laid out by product and by color and refreshed as the seasons change, so clients can walk in with a plan and leave with what they need.

Born in Canada, raised in Italy, back in Toronto at 17 with two days' notice.

His uncle offered him a flight, a place to stay and work. His dad's answer: "What are you waiting for?" Johnny from Spiver Canada and Decorative Plaster landed that Thursday and remembers being amazed by the lanes on the 401.

It never felt like starting over. At 17 he was continuing, straight into his uncle's painting business.

Wood glue as a poor man's plaster bonder

On a wall of crumbling brick, @newageartisans brushed on a mix of wood glue and water to lock the dust down before plastering. The glue rehydrates under the plaster and dries into one cohesive unit, a homemade bonder. Two coats of Domingue went straight over the top with no mesh, and the finish has held up for about a decade.

How Montana's climate shapes the finishes people ask for

@endurasurface explains mountain modern to @michaelanjelos as a craftsman base that turned modern while staying organic, with stone textures, tile, tongue and groove ceilings and faux Venetian walls running through the homes. He says that look drove him toward stone effects, metallics, liquid metal and linear regatta, plus a six month stretch where half his work was concrete effect, with lime wash Venetian now his most requested finish. He also notes Montana builds dark with fewer windows because of the cold, so high gloss gets specified often for the way it spreads light.

The man who put a trowel in Johnny's hand: Don Antonio.

Before him, Johnny of Spiver Canada was the one fetching tools and materials. Don Antonio was the first to say "here's the trowel, show me," and took the time to teach him how to use it. That is what it means to be lime burned.

He was a well respected builder in his community, and when Johnny left for Canada he told him there would always be work waiting if he came back.

At 14, Johnny of Spiver Canada was already on a job site in Italy.

He started as a laborer carrying mortar, blocks and bricks for an old school builder who took a house from the foundations all the way to the finished interior. That builder put a trowel in his hand. Johnny learned to plumb walls with mortar points, fill them with a lime plaster made with live lime, and pull it flat with a straight edge.

The lesson he still carries: the value of starting something and finishing it yourself.
