‘heaven and back’ has found a home on @cineasianfilms !!

in spring ‘23, i made ‘heaven and back’ for my thesis film.

i am well familiar with how gruelling student films can be, and was anticipating incredible stress and challenges ahead–but honestly, ‘heaven and back’ was the best and easiest thing i ever did in college.

after moving to america for school, i wrote and developed ‘heaven and back’ as i was struggling with the constant feeling that i was failing. but by the time of the film’s completion, ‘heaven and back’ had blossomed into something much more.

it feels like i should say this film is important to me because it gave me a voice and a platform to see my experiences represented in a film for the first time, but what i will say instead is that this film is important to me because it gave me people to talk to and to love.

in a predominantly white institute that cares little about truly showing up for its community of queer creatives of colour, it meant the world to me for my cast and crew to feel safe and excited about this project. we were constantly gushing about fruit motifs and demigod mythology and soulmates–

where i had constantly felt like there was something wrong with me, making ‘heaven and back’ with my team gifted me the realisation that despite everything, i still deserved to feel that i belonged somewhere, that i was loved.

thank you so much to everyone who helped make this film possible, and for loving me as much as i love you <3 by @limsidneh
