A friend donated these precious objects to us: Today, we watch movies on streaming services or perhaps still on DVD discs or files. But commercial pre-recorded films were made available in 8mm and Super 8 formats for consumer purchase from the 1930s through the early 1980s, and the peak of its popularity was during the 1970s.
It probably was among middle-class families.

Europe was one of the most vibrant markets for packaged 8mm home cinema. The UK, West Germany, France, and Italy had massive, active communities of home collectors. In the US, the trend started to fade as VCR took over.
As for Hong Kong, and the wider Far East region, pre-recorded commercial 8mm digests found an appreciable foothold, probably due to cheaper optical sound prints which made imports more affordable. But today, it's not easy to find except from 8mm connoisseur-collectors.

Vegueta, Las Palmas.
A casual walk after dinner. An often closed door opens to a chapel with live harp performance.
This little chapel is said to be formerly a place where Columbus prayed before his "conquest" of the new world (beginning with Central America).

This week, Film Notes publishes an essay by Linda Chiu-han Lai accompanying “A City in Transmission,” an online program of works by five Hong Kong video artists presented on e-flux Film in collaboration with Videotage. Lai approaches video essaying as a form of experimental action, examining how artists develop visual and sonic languages to give form to experiences and histories excluded from dominant narratives. Featuring Lai’s Voices Seen, Images Heard (2009) alongside videos by Ellen Pau, Lee Kai Chung, Serene Hui, and Yan Wai Yin Winnie, the program is available to watch here through September 30, 2026.

This house is from the 16h century.
27 Mendizabal street, Vegueta.
Note the beautiful facade.
The house is one of the oldest in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Neglected and unused for a long time, it was finally acquired by the capital's City Council a year ago.
Before official usage is confirmed, it has occasionally been the sleeping place for some homeless people, I was told. At least, it is serving some purposes.
