At the edge of the South Rose Garden. How it began. How it’s going. I’ve posted this first photo before. You can see the white roof of my simple little garden house. My husband and I built it ourselves, years and years ago. A weekend project, lasting numerous weekends. From much of any distance at all, a glance out to any of the garden areas gives the appearance that it’s on the verge of a takeover by nature. In truth, I suppose that it is, were I to neglect it for any prolonged span of time. Cocooned by creek and woods, with pockets of tidy and maintained, and alive with the constancy of change. The second photo shows that small building’s first winter, the build just completed. We’d begun it on Thanksgiving break. That flat, barren area had been, for about a decade, our lawn. At my request, the lawn was ALL removed by my husband. A few plants that had been in small beds within the lawn, remained: the canes of my first roses at bottom left, and some mounds of Miscanthus, already cut back in the cold of winter, and a few other things. I’d made up my mind that I wanted nothing but pathways and casual beds of flowers. These are the last of the yaupons and boxwoods to have been clipped this season. They are at the edge of the ‘cliffs’ and below, in the small garden at the garden house. Not surrounded by a traditional ’yard,’ for we have no lawn, we grow silence and birdsong, and a view of the changing of the seasons. Currently, it’s at summer’s peak, hot and hazy, and green. The first bloom of a new rose to my gardens…Rosa ‘Dannahue!’ Planted in early March of this year, this one has been slow rose to bloom, but, it’s just perfect. And…[swipe]These are the blooms of a more mature plant, in a photo from David Austin roses. Roses turning white? This yellow rose, ‘Good ‘Ol Summertime,’ is a (normally) yellow rose, that in the stress of the heat of summer, is now blooming white. So, also, are several of my pink rose varieties. The blossoms are smaller than they were in each of their bloom cycles since spring. Since these temperatures (this week’s highs and lows are on slide 4) are rather normal most years, this has now become an annual event. The roses’ normal colors and bloom sizes will return with the arrival of Autumn and more moderate temperatures.#greygardener#lifeamongtheflowers#gardeningtexas#thislittlemoment#countryhomeandgarden by @lindajames83
