Rogan Brown at Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses

Rogan Brown’s intricate paper sculptures are presented in dialogue with the visionary haute couture of Iris van Herpen in Sculpting the Senses, an internationally touring exhibition exploring the intersections of fashion, contemporary art, science, nature and technology.

Inspired by microscopic organisms, coral formations and the hidden systems of the natural world, Brown creates imagined organic forms from countless layers of hand- and laser-cut paper. Delicate in material, yet monumental in their complexity and presence, his works share Van Herpen’s fascination with growth, transformation and the structures that exist beyond immediate human perception.

Originally conceived by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses has since travelled internationally:

🇫🇷 Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris
🇦🇺 Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane
🇸🇬 ArtScience Museum, Singapore
🇳🇱 Kunsthal Rotterdam

The exhibition is now on view at the Brooklyn Museum in New York 🇺🇸, where Rogan Brown’s work is exhibited alongside more than 140 haute couture creations by Iris van Herpen. On view through 6 December 2026.

From sketch to wood.

Every work by Call me Frank begins long before the first veneer is placed. A carefully developed silhouette, the selection of each unique wood veneer, and the precision of every cut all contribute to the final composition.

These images offer a glimpse into that meticulous process—where craftsmanship, patience and material come together.

Call me Frank’s work will be presented at the Affordable Art Fair Stockholm, from 30 September to 4 October 2026.

Introducing Martha Scheeren (1958), based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Martha Scheeren explores the relationship between colour, light and spatial perception. Through layered transparencies and a refined use of colour, she creates works that subtly transform with changing light and the viewer’s perspective.

Balancing between painting and object, her works appear to both absorb and emit light, creating a quiet yet powerful presence within space.

Introducing photographer Dai Scheffer, based in The Netherlands.

Dai’s work moves between fine art and carefully staged photography, exploring how identity takes shape in relation to another. Through gesture, choreography, touch, and elegance, his images investigate the delicate balance between vulnerability and control, intimacy and distance.

In this portrait, the white camellia becomes a central symbol. Traditionally associated with devotion, longing, and quiet perfection, the flower embodies a restrained elegance while concealing emotional intensity beneath its delicate surface. Resting around the neck like both ornament and restraint, it becomes a subtle metaphor for intimacy, vulnerability, and the roles we assume in relation to one another.

Dai Scheffer, Camellia, Archival Pigment Print, 35 x 43 cm (edition of 6) and 80 x 100 cm (edition of 4)

Introducing Haringa+Olijve (H+O), artist duo Nel Haringa (1941) and Fred Olijve (1937), based in The Netherlands.

Since 1970, Haringa+Olijve have been creating autonomous artworks shaped by a deep fascination with architecture and spatial structures.

Their acrylic glass cubes, function as worlds of their own — simultaneously isolated from and deeply connected to their surroundings. Through layers of colour, reflection, and geometry, the works create shifting perspectives that continuously interact with light and space.

Introducing Rogan Brown (1966), based in the United Kingdom.

Through an extraordinarily meticulous process of hand and laser cutting, delicate layers of paper evolve into complex sculptural forms that seem to hover between the microscopic and the monumental. Drawing from microbiology, geology, and anatomy, Brown constructs imagined ecosystems where natural structures are reinterpreted with striking precision.

With Magic Circle Variation, a unique hand and laser cut paper work (70 × 70 cm), Rogan Brown captures the fragile complexity of life at its most elemental. Intricate patterns unfold like organic constellations — echoing cells, spores, and unseen worlds — where repetition and variation create a quiet, meditative rhythm.

Introducing Call me Frank (1986), based in Ghent, Belgium.

Through an exceptionally refined inlay technique, these individual pieces come together in a portrait that goes beyond likeness. The posture, the presence, the inner architecture of the subject unfold through grain, texture, and tone — where body and material become inseparable.

With Liam, a unique work in wood veneer inlay set in a custom oak frame (100 × 81 cm), Call me Frank reveals the quiet poetry held within material and memory. Each fragment of wood carries its own history — growth rings, knots, and scars — echoing the traces of a human life.
