Y’all! Your girl made it all the way to the New York Times!🥹🙌🏾📰

Kia Turner wrote a very timely piece on the tradition of line dancing in the Southern Black community, and its surge to global popularity, along with trail riding and our other traditions.🪭As a Houston girl with deep roots in Southwest Louisiana, zydeco and line dancing were the first dances I learned, so this story was very personal for me too. I was interviewed by her, along with some other amazing Black artists and culture bearers, and shared my knowledge.

Thank you so much Kia for interviewing me, and for SEEING our community! Having our story told by you, one of us, is so important! Thank you for allowing us to give context from our perspectives and for thinking enough of us to bring it to The New York Times! You’re a gem, as are you, DaLyah! Thank you for connecting us, and for sharing your knowledge!

“Where else can you see the hooka hooka next to Debbie Allen?” Only in my latest exhibition!✨ Thrilled to announce the opening of “Black Dance in Texas: The Way We Dance!”🩷

This exhibition has been a long time coming. It began back in 2020 when Dr. Alvia Wardlaw invited me to create it. Drawing from my lived experience as a dancer, choreographer, and scholar—and my time as a Rice University CERCL Scholar-in-Residence at the African American History Research Center at the Gregory School—we are finally here.

From Alvin Ailey and Debbie Allen to the hooka hooka and the Stanky Legg, I can’t wait to welcome you to experience and celebrate the way we dance down in Texas. 🩷❤️🖤🪘👢🩰

Join me at the exhibition reception: Saturday, February 28th from 12-2 p.m.

📍University Museum at Texas Southern University @UMuseTxSU
🗓️On View: February 14th-March 8th
🕥Tuesdays-Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Another one of my favorite experiences in Ghana was my field class in Cape Coast!🇬🇭As a professor on Semester at Sea, I designed and taught a course called World Dance, where we explored dance traditions across Asia, Africa, and Europe, examining their cultural, historical, and contemporary significance.

A key theme was decentering colonial and Western narratives of dance that center Ballet and Western Modern/Contemporary as the standard—because ALL dance is cultural!😊

🌍In Ghana and Kenya, I had the amazing opportunity to lead my students on field classes. Here are some highlights from my Ghana field class with some of the most incredible students I could’ve asked for:

🪘Studied the many dances and rhythms of Ghana
✍🏾Attended a special lecture by Dr. John-Doe Dordzo at the University of Cape Coast on the inseparable connection between dance and music in Africa
💃🏾Learned dances and rhythms firsthand from local artists in Cape Coast
🙌🏾Met with a local chief and community elders
💨Witnessed a traditional ancestral libation ceremony

✨Swipe to check them out!

Happy Mama K Day from Dance Afrikana!🎉

Mama K Day is a celebration of artist, choreographer, and scholar of African Dance, Dr. Kariamu Welsh.

🌍Dr. Welsh, affectionately known as “Mama K,” created the Umfundalai technique (Kiswahili for “essence” or “essential”), which she described as “a contemporary African dance technique that comprises its movement vocabulary from dance traditions throughout the diaspora.” Mama K was also the first Artistic Director of the National Dance Company of Zimbabwe🇿🇼and Professor Emerita at Temple University where she served on the African American Studies and Dance faculties for over 35 years.

Our director, Dr. Lindsay Gary (@doctor_linds @lindsaydances_ ), a licensed Umfundalai teacher, was one of the last cohort’s of licensed teachers to be approved by Dr. Welsh.🩷She had the opportunity to interview @monewwalks about the incredible legacy of Mama K on the very first episode of our podcast, Dance Afrikana, Dance!

🎙️Stream “Dancing Her Africa: Umfundalai & The Legacy of Dr. Kariamu Welsh” today to celebrate Mama K Day! More episodes coming soon!

We love this post-class photo—standing under the portraits of Marcus Garvey and Kwame Nkrumah. These two men had a tremendous influence on the Pan-African ideologies of Ghana. This was the perfect way to end our Kete dance workshop!🇬🇭

Can you tell we enjoyed ourselves?!🥳

Stay tuned for more!💫 by @lindsaydances_

Our Ghanaian Kete Dance Workshop with Dr. Emmanuel Cudjoe was a blast!🥳

Dr. Cudjoe, a scholar, dance artist, professor, and author of “The Embodiment and Transmission of Ghanaian Kete Royal Dance: From Palace to Academy,” is the son of an Asante chief.🇬🇭Experiencing his culture, artistry, and scholarship was truly a treat!

Thanks to all of you who came and shared with us!

Stay tuned for more!🩷🌍❤️ by @lindsaydances_
