As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor the poets, musicians, and visionaries whose voices have shaped history and continue to inspire the future. ✊🏾🔥

This powerful piece, recited by Dante Mitchell at Grand Performances' Music is History Poetry Night, summer 2024, speaks to the resilience, creativity, and unity that define Black culture.🖤

From the pyramids of Kemet to the shores of Ghana, through the ancient streets of Morocco and across the Strait of Gibraltar, I’ve been fortunate to walk in the footsteps of history and witness the remnants of empires, and stand on land that carries thousands of years of our glory. They may have stolen our crowns, but they could never strip us of our royalty.
On October 17th, I take the stage as THE AFRICAN KING for Kings & Queens of Poetry. 7p-10p In Torrance, Ca Tickets Available in Bio

This Saturday I will be reading at Miriam’s Garden. It’s a monthly poetry event held at the Hyde Park branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. The event is named for Miriam Matthews, a pioneering Angeleno and central figure in the history of Los Angeles libraries.

Librarian Kelly Wallace wrote in a 2021 essay that, “Miriam Matthews was the first African American librarian employed by the Los Angeles Public Library. She would remain the only African American librarian employed by the Los Angeles Public Library for the next twenty years.”

Yago Cura works at the Hyde Park branch of the Los Angeles Public Library on Florence & Van Ness. Inspired by Matthews and her life story he started a monthly poetry series, “Miriam’s Garden.”

Miriam’s Garden is a poetry reading series in Hyde Park/Park Mesa View Heights/CD8 named in honor of LA’s first black librarian, Ms Miriam Matthews. The series has been curated by the Adult Librarian since March of 2023 and Luis J Rodriguez, Sesshu Foster and William Archila have featured at the garden.

Matthew’s life story is comparable to other pioneering African American Angelenos from the early 20th Century like architect Paul Williams and the business owner and namesake of the small pocket park behind the Bradbury Building, Biddy Mason.

Jean Paul Guadamuz, is born and raised in Compton, trying to live his life through the best and worst. He’s real with what he writes and pretty blunt at times. As he says, “Just read what I got.”

Dante Mitchell, a native of Inglewood, California, is a multifaceted creative and educator based in Los Angeles. He is a writer, actor, performer, recording artist, coach, and teacher of poetry, coding, and Tai Chi. His published works have appeared in newspapers, magazines, anthologies, commercials, and audio recordings, and his poetry has been featured on Good Day LA and at the Palm Springs Film Festival. Dante has performed nationwide and spoken at schools and colleges to champion arts and literacy. In his community of Leimert Park, he has curated youth book drives and benefit concerts, proudly serving as a community ambassador dedicated to inspiring the next generation to dream big. taken in Friends of the Hyde Park Miriam Matthew Library by @lineageofthekingdom

🧘🌿 Tai Chi & Fitness is more than just movement!
☀️ Our students practice balance, mindfulness, and healthy movement while having fun together. This is what prevention looks like; creating opportunities to build confidence, reduce stress, strengthen relationships, and develop lifelong healthy habits.
Here’s to moving with purpose, breathing deeply, and growing stronger together.💚 Thanks coach Dante! by @lineageofthekingdom

Huge thank you to 39th Street Films for trusting @uh_sar and I to create the title track for Awkward Romance, a film that explores the ups and downs of navigating love and connection in the aftermath of the COVID lockdown. Taking on the challenge of writing for a story instead of just a song pushed me creatively, and seeing it all come together at the premiere made it even more special. Grateful for the opportunity. 🙏🏾

Awkward Romance )the song) produced by @uh_sar is available on all streaming platforms!
