When your last name is Coffee and you have a beach house the obvious choice for a dolphin design is a seascape inspired by a coffee shop! We’ve got cinnamon roll hermit crabs, coffee bean turtles, muffin jellies, black and white cookie angelfish, croissant crabs, teaspoon toting seahorses and an octopus getting his espresso fix surrounded by coral and seaweed nestled in cappuccino cups! I think this is dolphin number 4 for me now 😅 which is crazy because painting just one was on my bucket list a little over a year ago! These guys are a Virginia Beach staple and I’m always honored to be a part of the project! Last episode of making a custom sign! This time there is Timelapse and a scenic drive of the beautiful Sandbridge Beach neighborhood in Virginia Beach, VA including passing the landmarks of @sandbridge_island and the famous Sandbridge Seaside Market (get their donuts if you ever have a chance - IYKYK!) But here you get a better view of the colors and textures of the sign and also how truly lightweight they are! Part 4…adding paint! I spend sooooo much time talking color with my clients in the design process because these guys need to POP from the street! People don’t know where they’re going and being able to spot the house name makes this so much easier when guests are arriving and house numbers may not be easily visible, plus these signs are ultimately marketing tools for the short term rental properties-they give the first taste of the kind of vibe that a guest will experience with their stay and I think that’s super important.

Onto the paint and brushes I use…I’m not sponsored by either of these products, I just genuinely love them and they’ve held up fantastically in my experience-but I’m not saying I wouldn’t love a sponsorship from @sherwinwilliams or @zibrapainting 😂 I use exclusively use Sherwin Williams All Surface Enamel for paint-because it’s and enamel it creates a strong but semi flexible kind of shell and is DURABLE against the sun and salt of coastal living…I’m talking 8-10 years of colorfast-ness in direct light without fading which is huge! They’re actually phasing out this product to replace with an even more durable paint so I will slowly be switching over and I’m amped to try the new stuff, called Forte, out! For my brushes I use my wide variety of Zibra muralist brushes for the larger sections and for when I need crispy lines…they just hold so much paint and give superior coverage with less dips. For the smaller details or spots where I’ve gotta get in tight spaces I use just some janky craft brushes because jamming them into the nooks and crannies will tear up any brush-so I want something I’ll feel less guilty about ruining and running through.

Part 3 of making a custom sign. Carving is the second most labor intensive part so this is split over 2 days of work, but here I’m using a plunge router to make this baby go from 2D to 3D! Normally this process includes a dremel hand tool for details but because this whopper is on such a large scale I was able to just use smaller bits on the router. Now that it’s all carved and smooth I’m off to paint! Part 2 of making a sign in real time. Wasn’t super confident in the one handed execution and had to cut due to sketchiness in certain spots but you get the idea! And no part of me wanted the off cuts to fall on my bare feet bc ya know…safety first! Also…this foam dust is brutal and I really should be wearing my respirator mask but the saw is way less dusty than the router and it wasn’t too bad. Annnnnyway…here’s this cool hand carved HDU beach house sign I designed and am making!
