I turned 30 this past weekend, which still feels a little weird. It has me thinking less about age and more about how much life can happen in ten years.

My early 20s were heavy and reckless. My mid 20s were when I started figuring out who I actually was. & my late 20s were when I really locked in.

There was a point in my life when I quietly didn’t expect to make it this far. I had an expiration date in my head for myself, and living past that has changed me. Back then, the future felt small and uncertain. Now I look ahead and think, what can’t I do?

This decade gave me endings, health scares, mentally hard moments, and a lot of growth I didn’t always ask for. But it also gave me clarity. I earned my M.A., built a career in education and research, and found a way to make my passions for writing and media part of meaningful work. I’m also proud that my grad school research is being cited and helping other scholars in Asian diaspora research today. & I’m almost 4 years in remission from the Big C now! #ILivedBitch

I’m still loud. Still outspoken. Maybe just a little more tame now. Or maybe working with federal employees killed a part of me inside…

If we crossed paths in the last ten years, thank you. I really do remember people, and when I look back, this decade feels like a mosaic of everyone I met, cared about, learned from, and loved in different ways.

I don’t really regret anything. If I have one regret, it’s not loving myself more during the hardest parts of my life. But I made it here, I know myself better now, and at this point… fuck it, we ball 🙏🏼

Third time in 🇯🇵 and somehow my favorite moments were the mundane ones: walking around with my headphones on, taking the train, talking to the cashier at the konbini, and watching everyday life happen around me.

Maybe that sounds boring, but I think that’s what I love about it. You get to see how people move through the world somewhere else, witness their routines and shared spaces, and for a little while you get to be part of it too.

Congratulations to my cousin Cookie on graduating from PA school! I’m so proud of you 🥹 Growing up, you were the cousin on my dad’s side I was closest too cuz we were the same age, both only children, and both our moms owned nail salons 🥲 I’ll never forget the times when you would text me before or after an exam, worrying about your score … and end up with an A 🤣 You’re one of the smartest people I know!
