“DEFY" is a visual poem made by our newly formed Filipino-American Creative Collective, A BUNCH OF SAVAGES, in celebration of AANHPI heritage month and meant to unlock perspectives that many have never seen or understood. One year ago, somewhere between the howler monkeys in Costa Rica and a production schedule that probably violated several laws of physics, I met the force of nature that is Molly Schiot and Mego Lin. Or rather, I entered orbit around a partnership that was already moving at full speed.They’ve built the kind of creative relationship that people spend entire careers looking for — instinctive, sharp, wildly funny, deeply collaborative. The sort of duo where half the communication happens with a glance across set and somehow everything still gets done beautifully. Getting to work alongside them this past year has felt a little like accidentally being invited onto the 1996 Chicago Bulls. You try not to ruin the chemistry and stay grateful they keep passing you the ball.What I admire most about Molly is the way she directs people without ever making them feel directed. She has this rare gift for pulling honesty out of everyone around her while making it all feel effortless. And Mego moves through the chaos like she’s secretly running the entire universe from her Notes app. Together, they’ve created an environment that feels ambitious without becoming self-serious — which is rarer than good airport coffee.It’s also slightly ridiculous that Mego and I hadn’t met sooner. Same college, same extended circle of friends, enough overlap to make you wonder if the universe was just waiting for better timing. And Molly being as obsessed with tennis as I am somehow feels cosmically important. Anyone who watches a fifth-set tiebreak like it’s a presidential election is someone I trust immediately.There’s something incredibly grounding about finding people who are exceptional at what they do and still make the whole thing fun. Even when you’re exhausted, freezing, delayed, under-caffeinated, or being screamed at by wildlife in Costa Rica.Very lucky to be part of this team.
