A little sunshine among the pine needles. 🌲💛

True to its name, the Pine Warbler has a special fondness for pine trees, where it searches the branches for insects and spiders. Its soft yellow coloring blends beautifully with the greens and golds of the changing season.

Spotted during our Fall 2026 Tuesday Morning Walks in Central Park and photographed by Adisha Verma, this Pine Warbler offered a lovely glimpse of autumn migration.

❤️ Remembering Lee Rogers
(AKA Elise Brainbridge)

Friends, birders, and members of the Central Park community will gather this Saturday, October 10, to remember Lee Rogers and celebrate her life.

For decades, Lee was a familiar presence in the Ramble, where she painted the birds and wildlife she loved and helped care for the feeders at Evodia Field.

Two gatherings will take place in the Central Park Ramble:

🕊️ **2:00 PM | The Ramble: Rustic Shelter **
Rev. Bartlett of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church will lead a memorial service honoring Lee. Many of her friends from the church, shelter, and the park will be in attendance.

🐦 **2:30 PM | The Ramble: Evodia Field Bird Feeders **
Friends from the birding community will gather informally to share memories and remember Lee together.

All who knew Lee, or whose lives she touched in Central Park, are welcome.

We've also published a remembrance of Lee's life, artwork, and years caring for Central Park's birds, including personal memories from longtime friends Jean Shum and Will Papp.

Female birds have been singing all along. We just weren’t always listening. 🎶🐦

For generations, birdsong was largely studied as a male behavior. But research by Dr. Karan Odom and her colleagues is helping rewrite that story. Female song is widespread across the songbird family tree and likely existed in the common ancestor of modern songbirds.

That changes the question from “Why did female birds evolve song?” to something far more intriguing: Why did females in some species stop singing?

In A Female Perspective on Birdsong, Dr. Odom explores what female song can teach us about the evolution of birdsong, why it was overlooked for so long, and just how much there is still to discover.

🎥 The full lecture is now available on the LSNY Website and YouTube channel. https://bit.ly/Odom2026

A little bird with an extraordinary journey. 🍂🐦

The Blackpoll Warbler may look unassuming in its fall plumage, but it's one of the great long-distance migrants. Many make an incredible nonstop flight over the Atlantic Ocean to wintering grounds in South America.

Photographed by Sheila Epstein during one of our Fall 2026 Tuesday Morning Walks in Central Park, this little traveler reminds us how remarkable migration can be.

Remembering Elise Bainbridge. ❤️

For so many years, Elise was a familiar presence in Central Park, especially in the Ramble, where her love for birds was woven into her daily life.
She watched them, cared for them, painted them, and shared that love with the many birders and park regulars who came to know her over the years. For those who spend time in Central Park, she became part of the fabric of the place itself.

We are grateful for Elise’s enduring love and care for Central Park’s birds and for the beauty she created in their honor.

She will be deeply missed by the Central Park and New York birding communities.

Rest in peace, Elise. 🕊️

A flash of yellow in the fall undergrowth. 🍁

With its bright yellow undertail and habit of constantly bobbing its tail, the Palm Warbler is a lively sight during fall migration. Unlike many warblers that stay high in the treetops, Palm Warblers often forage low in shrubs or even walk along the ground.

Rain, rain, go away! 🌧️

Unfortunately, Mother Nature has other plans for us this weekend. Due to the forecast for high winds and heavy rain, the Fall Homecoming Picnic and all LSNY weekend field trips are canceled for the safety of our members and trip leaders.

We’re disappointed to miss another weekend together, but there’s plenty more birding ahead this fall. 🍂🐦

Visit the LSNY website to see upcoming field trips, meetings, and events. We hope to see you soon!

A woodpecker with a sweet tooth. 🍁

The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker earns its name by drilling neat rows of small holes in tree bark and returning to drink the sap. These sap wells also attract insects, giving the bird another source of food.

A familiar fall migrant in Central Park, this striking woodpecker was photographed by Adisha Verma during one of our Fall 2026 Tuesday Morning Walks.

Linnaean Society General Meeting
Tuesday, October 13, 2026 | 7:00 PM ET

CAPTION:

What can DNA tell us about the evolution of birds? Quite a lot, it turns out.

Join us for a talk with Dr. Jeremy J. Kirchman, who has spent 30 years sequencing bird DNA to uncover their evolutionary history. He’ll explore how remarkable advances in genomics have transformed our understanding of the avian tree of life, sometimes revealing surprising relationships and even reshaping how bird families, genera, and species are classified.

We’ll also discover how new genomic research is helping scientists understand the genetics behind adaptation and the process by which new species arise.

You’re looking at a caterpillar’s secret defense system.

When threatened, swallowtail caterpillars can suddenly reveal an osmeterium — a small, forked organ hidden just behind the head. It releases a strong smell designed to discourage predators.

It appears in an instant, and then disappears again.

One of those extraordinary things happening at very small scale in the gardens at The Battery — if you happen to be looking closely enough. taken in The Battery by @linnaeanny
