Placemaking is the very important human task of collaboratively shaping human occupied spaces to maximize value through form and function. One of my college capstones focused on placemaking through community-based design modeling. It was a brilliant course that radically shifted how I saw my role in the world. I am grateful to my professors and peers.

While academia was a wonderful world for me and a beautiful chapter in my life - nature has always been the best educator. I look to the wilds when I need inspiration, education, comfort, healing, a snack, adventure, humbling, and everything in between. A walk through the woods is more invigorating than a shot of espresso.

And, if you want to know anything about placemaking - just look to the Illinois landscape. Go deep in the woods, wade through the wetlands, and dance in the prairie. Once you've thoroughly explored those three - start to look for patterns. Gamify your studies. Invest in a few ID books or make your own. Take notes.

Placemaking in the Woods: Nature uses lots of colors & pretty patterns (public art), nature is diverse (triangulate), nature is abundant (community).

What if we marked the passing of time with the blooming of flowers instead of the naming of months?

The cicadas are calling.

What if we marked the passing of time with the sounds of nature instead of the sound of the alarm?

The grosbeaks and the buntings are here.

What if we marked the passing of time by the presence or absence of migratory birds instead of the rigidity of a calendar?

I imagine a notion of time that is more of a comfort than a burden. by @linzelaird

✨Chicago 2025 for IPW✨

I started my Instagram to document adventures. And, then I settled. I stopped radically moving towards my goals. I made myself small to accommodate people who didn't understand me. I stopped sharing consistently on social media. I didn't feel safe sharing my soul. And, I broke my own heart - by hiding it.

I've been healing for a while - relearning myself, establishing boundaries, resetting patterns. I've come a long way in my career. And, most importantly, I've recommitted to myself. I hope someday soon - I'll be emotionally ready to share again. Until then, these bits of vulnerability will have to do. by @linzelaird

And, the whole world stood still so we could study the beauty in a single blooming blade of grass together.

I wished in that moment the whole world was so forgiving, so soft, so loving. "Oh my darling, you need a moment to tickle ferns? Please, take pictures and bring back stories." Alas, only nature is so natural.

"But, I am nature!" I protested. "Clothed so meticulously in culture I could hardly recognize you, my dear," cooed the Cypress dutifully. by @linzelaird

I got home late from work Thursday. Walking in at 10:45 PM, Lovejoy was naturally overjoyed to see me. I went right to bed and he followed. I think he could tell I was tired, because he didn't insist on playing. Instead, he curled up next to me and took a big sniff of my hair, which is what I do to him when I come home from a work trip. 🤣😭

In other news, his soccer ball is done. Don't worry - I'm not letting him eat it or litter micro plastics. by @linzelaird

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

I stumbled upon this brilliant gem on maps. I knew nothing about it and did almost no research before going. I saw the name and a few photos. That was all I needed to see. I called a ride share and headed to where I needed to be. Upon arrival, I discovered that there was a $15 entry fee. No worries. And, I quickly realized it was both an indoor and outdoor space, with a gift shop and workshops.

I could have spent years there. I wanted to sit down and meditate; but, I didn't have time to linger. Apparently, back in the day, there was no fee and children ran wildly through the space. When I grow up, I hope to be an eclectic artist that creates wildly immersive spaces that inspire the desire to linger.
