Many things make up a nation. Its people. Its landmarks. Its food. And history, culture, ambitions.

But equally important, it’s the little, tangible things that form our core - that old kopi mug, banana trees, our wet markets, bougainvillea, a drink by the River, Magnolia and New Moon brollies.

It’s in our floors, our walls. All the mundane colours, patterns, and shadows that exude a kind of serenity - the kind found only in a time of unhurriedness. A time that once was.

Home is a feeling evoked by these little symbols; the little things that make up this Little Red Dot. Home is a place called Singapore. Home is here.

Exposing identity.

The other day, I shot one roll of film twice - once at the National Gallery, once at People’s Park Complex. Double exposures.

I first chose paintings from the Southeast Asian and Latin America exhibition (mostly), which featured artwork depicting struggles for independence or identity - whether for one's nation or oneself.

I then chose People’s Park Complex, given that it is thought of (by some) as a symbol of Singapore’s post-independence aspirations. Completed in 1973, the Complex was the apparently first multi-use complex in the region - just fresh as an independent nation, we were already eager to impress.

These two exposures, layered over each other, attempt to show the convergence of post-WW2 ideals Singapore once shared with the region. Though the exact struggles and their depths differ from nation to nation, they were bound by faith, hope, and love.

P.S. Unfortunately my camera had its focal point stuck at the near distance. Hence any photos of general areas were blur. Am sending the camera for repair, but the blurriness does add to the vibe.

Back at the gallery.

The other day, I spent lunchtime at the National Gallery. This is my third time here (there are two other posts, one being my very first post), and there were new exhibits. It's the holiday season, there'd be many tourists and visitors. I was excited to see what I could photograph.

But I had forgotten to set my image file to RAW, and wasn't able to edit much light in post. So here you go, a set of low-quality JPEGs! But that's why substance ought to prevail over form. And hopefully, this set has some of the former.

Wake up, it's 2016.

In 2016, I was just getting into taking pictures. This was one of the first few sets I took. I'm so glad that I've grown from an Amateur to an amateur 😋 taken in Rochor, Singapore by @lioncityhyperbole

SAHM (衫) / SHOES.

(1) THE CONCEPT:

I chose to photograph intricately-designed traditional Chinese garments alongside everyday, functional footwear.

The idea is to contrast ornament and utility, reflecting the Singaporean condition in which heritage is curated and its preservation a luxury, while practicality drives progress and dictates how daily life is lived.

On the title, “SAHM” is the Cantonese pronunciation for the word, "衫" - or, clothes; I thought this had a nice ring with “SHOES”.

P.S. My favourite frame is #2, where my imagination was caught by the idea of hands reaching out to grab passersby's shoes for the mannequins' bare feet.

(2) THE INSPIRATION:

What began as an interest in all things Konica Hexar
AF led me to @cal_holland, who inspired this set of photos shot during a spare 30 minutes I had in Chinatown, Singapore.

The spark came from Cal speaking about photographing shoes in a @tim.d.jamieson YouTube feature, as well as a separate conversation (also on YouTube) with @alaricmacdonald, where Cal highlighted the genius of @jeffmermelstein’s “Twirl/ Run” - combining pictures of women twirling their hair and people on the run, "whose dissonance creates a new way of observing our prevailing anxiety and sense of disorder." (@powerhousebooks)

I’m nowhere near to attaining the mastery of Cal, Tim, Alaric, or Mermelstein. But l’m taking the advice to start simple, be intentional, and keep practising. Please do yourself a favour and check out their works!

Chinese Chess: Set Two

After a two-month hiatus, I’m back on the street with two sets of film photos 🎞️📸

I was inspired by @fujifilmsg's YouTube feature with @mindytanphoto a few years back, where she highlighted layering and the importance of contextual details. This gave me a fresh perspective from which to approach this often-photographed location in Chinatown. I hope I did the mood and context justice!

I’m particularly proud of the first photo in this set; I don't believe I've seen any photo of this rose among the thorns *smiling*! She was wonderful to talk to and beamed when I asked to take her picture 🥹
