This Halloween we are proud to welcome world renowned ghouls and curators of Shambhala’s Living (Dead) Room Stage to murder our dance floor and haunt our decks this Halloween Night. The last time Lion-S and Hoola played The Downbeat it was a sweaty mess. Lion- S played a vibing tribute set for longterm friend, DJ Dan (RIP) , then Hoola sealed the deal, playing all manner of house, breaks, techno, boogie and electro- and delivering one of the best sets we’ve seen in our space. Lion-S has long been an island favourite and we can’t wait to have her back at The Downbeat. Hoola is one of those rare DJ’s who is your favourite DJ’s favourite, but will also rock whatever crowd is in front of him, honing in to what they are thirsty for in the moment. Rounding out this show will be longtime Shambahla and Living Room collaborator, Leif, who will play a set after Lion-S and then tag with Hoola before Hoola takes it home solo. Opening the night is a fiendish back 2 back set from two of the clubs favourite up and comers, Jurgen Daze and Moodbeach. Don’t be tortured for eternity with the fomo of having missed this bone shaking creature feature.

Something new is taking root in Castlegar. A fresh little slice of culture for our community to enjoy.

Next Saturday, September 12th, Hoola is stepping into a new venue in town for the first instalment of a new all-vinyl DJ series.

He’s been craving an opportunity to build something of his own in his backyard for a while now… and the moment has finally arrived. 🌱🪩🎶

For the first instalment, he’s pulling out the crates and taking us on a proper five-hour set, doing what he does best. Digging deep and running through the garden of all genres selected to make you feel good.

Expect a wide range including rare psych and rock classics woven with disco, funk, dub, house, breaks, capped off with a little bit of bass. Guaranteed something for everyone and likely to please the discerning music aficionado, the crate digger / vinyl heads, the curious listener and the dance floor enthusiasts.

Come through and support the kick off something new in the Gar❤️

My favourite season in the Kootenays is upon us. 🌱🌻

A huge shoutout to all my friends and local farmers who pour so much love, time, labour and dedication into growing abundant gardens filled with flowers, medicinal plants and food.

Every harvest season, I find myself pinching myself with gratitude for the privilege of living in a community where gardens can thrive. I have an overwhelming amount of respect for those who dedicate themselves to this craft and to nurturing a deeper relationship with the Earth.

I also hold a lot of awareness that this kind of abundance, space and access is a privilege. A dream that isn’t available to everyone. At a time when so many people are struggling simply to get by, it can feel easy to lose hope in the systems we’ve created.

So perhaps this is my little reminder: don’t give up hope. And wherever you can, in whatever way is accessible to you, keep a connection with the Earth. Grow a few herbs or flowers on a balcony. Plant something in a pot. Participate in a community garden. Support a local farm. And when we have the means to choose where our grocery dollars go, consider choosing locally grown, seasonal food.

Small acts matter.

Maybe I’m dreaming, but I genuinely believe humanity has the potential to shift our intentions, our values and the way we care for one another and this planet.

I still believe in the possibility of creating a world that exists for those who choose to build it.

Grateful to witness it growing around me. taken in Winlaw BC by @lionitaspice

I could never have imagined this moment, and I’m so grateful that it happened. ❤️

A once-in-a-lifetime experience sharing the festival world we’ve been immersed in for nearly three decades with my biological mother, Shelagh, and sister Laurenn.

They arrived Friday just in time to experience Meowmix and Moontricks at the Living Room Stage, followed by a tour of the stages and a glimpse into the music, community, and unique subculture of Shambhala in today’s era ~something that can only truly be understood by experiencing it.

Meowmix is a Nelson based pioneering all-female DJ crew. Active for 25+ years. Known for genre-spanning B2B sets, Vinyl era roots, and an intuitive connection to the dance floor. With countless sold-out shows & appearances at Shambhala Music Festival and beyond.

Always a good time on the floor with these ladies behind the decks! Who’s looking forward to a dance? 😻

In loving memory of Jason Whyte.

A kind-hearted soul whose genuine passion for his craft and dedication to the early West Coast underground music movement left a lasting mark. His contributions to the to the early days of Shambhala will not be forgotten.

The foundation of our friendship was built in that era.

There was something special about crossing paths with Jason in the most random places. Often somewhere deep in the trees, rigging stretch fabric and passionately projecting his visual art purely for the love of it.

Of the many memories I have, a few that stand out most:

A spontaneous encounter in Sayulita that turned into joining him on his surf mission and attempting to teach Hoola 🏄‍♂️(hilarious in the best way)… followed by an impromptu stop in at our friend’s where we captured the photo of him, hugging this amazing tree. Capped off with a fun B2B dj set at a club in town.

Another memory I deeply cherish was being able to welcome Jason and his daughter Ocea to dj a B2B father daughter set at the Living Room stage. One for the books.

My Heart goes out to Ocea, his chosen family, old friends, and everyone grieving this loss. Jason’s spirit, creativity, and heart touched many, and those memories will live on.
