A couple of friends and I attended the preview of this extraordinary play written and directed by @kalebaguilera and now showing at the Broadway Theatre, Catford until Sunday 25th October. 1973. London is on the verge of a terribly cold winter with PM Edward Heath’s announcement of a three-day week. Just arrived from Jamaica, Irene joins her childhood sweetheart Everton in London, sharing a tiny room in a house in Peckham, as the two adjust to their new life together and navigate a racist new country, unwelcoming to the growing Caribbean population. This is the final show in the Ryan Calais Cameron Season, a groundbreaking initiative championing emerging Black and Global Majority writers from South-east London. Go and see it if you can!! Tickets £12 - £15 https://www.broadwaytheatre.org.uk/events/how-to-keep-warm-in-winter #theatre #londontheatre #broadwaytheatre #kalebdaguilar#ryancalaiscameron by @lisa4884smith

If you've read and enjoyed a book lately (including mine 😉), one of the nicest things you can do for the author is... ...write a review. Why? Because we love a bit of an ego boost, obviously, but also: It encourages the algorithm to increase the visibility of the book, which hopefully means it makes it into more readers' hands, which definitely gives us a better chance of publishing our next books, which means you'll get to read more by us! (So it's a nice thing to do for yourself as well. Win-win 😊!) You can post reviews on: ✅Amazon ✅Goodreads ✅Waterstones Or anywhere else you pay attention to reviews and ⭐ ratings They all help! Tip: you don't need to have purchased it from that retailer to write a review there. I wrote this post to remind myself as well. These are some of my recent favourite reads that I've just left reviews for: ⭐Bad Queer by Gayathiri Kamalakanthan ⭐Minor Detail by Albania Shibli ⭐Use the Words You Have by Kimberly Campanello ⭐Book of Mutter by Kate Zambreno ⭐The Strangers by Naomi Alderman ⭐The Daughter in the Cellar by Yvette Davies ⭐Wildheart by Bec Manser ⭐The Inn at the Foot of Mount Vengeance by Chiara Bullen ⭐Jamaica Road by Lisa Smith If you're looking for a new book, check them out! Thanks for reading and thanks for reviewing ❤️❤️❤️ by @lisa4884smith
MISS HORTENSE AND THE LAST RITES by @mel_pennant One of my favourite crime novels last year was Miss Hortense’s debut case, A MURDER FOR MISS HORTENSE. I am loving reacquainting myself with this formidable woman and her eccentric group of friends and acquaintances. These are stories that sing; Mel Pennant writes with joy and such an engaging voice and Miss Hortense is a character to be treasured. I am looking forward to chatting to Mel about her award-winning creation at this year’s @lincsbookfestival - alongside authors @marxia1 and @lisa4884smith on Friday 2nd October. JAMAICA ROAD by @lisa4884smith A captivating exploration of identity and race set in the 1980s and 1990s, JAMAICA ROAD reminds us of how far we have come and how fragile that progress still is. Black adolescents Daphne Johnson and Cornelius (Connie) Small become our guides, their relationship and their experiences the lenses through which the reader observes the systemic prejudices that still, all too often, plague us. A warm and empathetic novel that informs, entertains and challenges us to be better. I will be chatting to Lisa - alongside @marxia1 and @mel_pennant - at this year’s @lincsbookfestival on Friday 2nd October at 2pm. I read the text of Ntozake Shange’s play in the 1990s when I was in my twenties, now I’ve finally seen it performed live @theyardtheatre -and what a performance! @nadine_higgin @tatendax @rossime @cherrelleskeete @alexthomassmith you made me feel ALL the feels!! Brilliantly directed by Diane Page. This play is a triumph and I’m so glad to have finally seen it. #theyardtheatre #forcoloredgirls #ntozakeshange #supportblacktheatre by @lisa4884smith
Author Lisa Smith, is joining Leicester Libraries in supporting the National Year of Reading 2026. "I've loved books for as long as I can remember. For me, reading has provided a springboard into imagination and learning. It has also been a tremendous source of comfort and empathy, something that is much needed in a world that is increasingly divided. A mind that doesn't read is easier to distract, easier to control. For me, reading is freedom." Lisa will also be joining us for an 'In conversation with' event on: 🗓Saturday 3 October, 2 - 3pm 📍Leicester Central Library Where she will be accompanied by author and playwright Mel Pennant and the event will be hosted by broadcaster Merisha Stevenson. Make sure you book your ticket. Link in our bio. Part of our #BlackHistoryMonth programme of events. #GoAllIn2026 #NationalYearOfReading2026 @mel_pennant @merishaspeaks by @lisa4884smith
