I’ve been so lucky to have an abundance of support from SoCal readers, writer friends, local bookstores, book clubs, writers groups ! 📕♥️ it’s a thriving community.

Have Mercy On Us has been out over a year, and as an indie author, I’m grateful to still be doing events. Barnes and Noble signings are a a great way to meet new readers who might not normally pick up a short story collection. 💛

How to make a writer feel special…Put her name on the awning! 🎉💙What a thrill it was to show up at the Regency Theatre in San Juan Capistrano and see this.

🌴🌴🌴 IKE: A Publishing Project has published an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary writers and stories. Our next publication marries the two in stories separated by nearly a century: “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston and “Fort Pierce, Florida” by Lisa Cupolo.   “Sweat” Hurston’s 1926 classic is a story of domestic labor, danger, and a woman who refuses to break. Delia Jones works herself to the bone in the thick Florida heat, her sweat becoming both burden and salvation.  “Fort Pierce, Florida” Cupolo’s contemporary story imagines Hurston in 1948, working as a motel maid in the final years of her life. It’s a portrait of quiet endurance: a woman who has already shaped American literature yet now moves through the world almost unseen.  Presented in a tête‑bêche edition, this format is designed to create a physical conversation between stories. Readers flip the book to switch perspectives—an act that mirrors the thematic turn between Hurston’s explosive realism and Cupolo’s elegiac imagining.  This format isn’t just a novelty. It’s a structural choice that creates a rare tête-bêche dynamic: Hurston as creator on one side, Hurston as character on the other.  The result is a collectible object that feels both classic and contemporary. Barbara DeMarco-Barrett’s collection, POOL FISHING, is out now and it’s a fabulous collection! It was a fun discussion of the stories last night with 32 women in Newport Beach, hosted and led by brilliant and gracious Candi Sary. 🩵 @candi.sary @barbarademarcobarrett

POOL FISHING is an entertaining ride of noir stories. Demarco-Barrett writes deftly and with humor about characters finding their way. I’m reminded of Elmore Leonards’s fast-talking characters, people on the wrong side of the tracks and yet you find you’re still rooting for them.
