“He loves me, he loves me not…”
In this piece, I explore how jewellery marks our shift from seeking outside approval to claiming our own self-worth. It reinterprets the game “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not”—turning a passive choice into an intentional act of self-reliance.
The design, consisting of 12 individual brooches, invites you to interact with the work:
•Removing petals symbolises shedding self-doubt and societal expectations.
•Attaching petals represents actively choosing your own boundaries, imperfections, and personal wins.
When every petal is removed, a resilient metal core remains entirely intact. It serves as a tactile reminder that your intrinsic worth is complete on its own, needing no extra ornamentation to be whole. You are the ultimate keeper of your own value.
Brass, enamel, powder coated. Height 180mm

Taking a look back at an archive piece from my 1990 exhibition at 331-SDS Jewellery Gallery.
This collection was a playful exploration built entirely around linguistic wordplay on the suffix ‘RING’—subverting everyday objects, commercial materials, and familiar phrases into wearable contemporary art.
Featured here is counteRING, fabricated in sterling silver and fitted with a rubber finger guard.
The piece explores the repetitive act of handling paper currency—specifically referencing the rubber thimbles worn by bank tellers and cashiers to count money. By framing a utilitarian office tool within precious sterling silver, counteRING juxtaposes functional labor with precious metal adornment, asking the wearer to consider the true measure of value and exchange in contemporary jewellery.
Other pieces in this series pushed the concept in different directions:
* cement rendeRING: A literal architectural exploration using raw cement as a primary structural element.
* reflectoRING: Incorporating utilitarian bicycle reflectors to manipulate light and visibility.
* ring for a party goer: Drawing on the ephemeral, lightweight form of a classic folded paper party hat.
I’ll be sharing one piece from this archival series each week to reflect on how conceptual wordplay, material subversion, and structural design continue to inform my practice.

This collection was a playful exploration built entirely around wordplay on the word ‘RING’—subverting everyday objects, phrases, and materials into wearable contemporary art.
Featured here is ‘teeteRING’, crafted in sterling silver and garnets.

teeteRING: Exploring tension and balance by setting stones precariously along the very edge of the metal.

Other pieces in this series pushed the concept in different directions:
* cement rendeRING: A literal take using cement as a primary material.
* reflectoRING: Incorporating everyday bike reflectors.
* ring for a party goer: Inspired by the lightweight, playful form of a paper party hat.

This collection was a playful exploration built entirely around wordplay on the word ‘RING’—subverting everyday objects, phrases, and materials into wearable contemporary art.
Featured here is ‘candelabra RING’, crafted in sterling silver. The design draws directly from the linear, repeating form of a classic candelabra, translating architecture and household objects into a distinctive statement piece across the hand.

Imagined following a trip to Japan, this 20ct gold ring translates the graphic contrast and raw textures of Tokyo’s architecture and fashion into wearable sculpture.

Its silhouette formed from a post reflection of a Tokyo ikebana exhibition. It featured witch hazel, which has golden paper-thin, ribbon-like petals.

Rejecting permanent solder, the entire ring relies on a single act of tension: it is secured purely by red silk thread (aka), a traditional symbol of life energy and spiritual protection that serves as the ring’s sole structural backbone.

Finely crimped gold mimics the delicate, twisted ribbons of the witch hazel, contrasting against sweeping, minimalist lines that carve out negative space around the hand.

At the ends of the thread sit tiny stamped gold seals (inkan), capping the silk while channeling Japanese personal marks that guarantee authenticity, identity, and the integrity of uncompromised hand-craftsmanship.

I’ve been exploring crimped metal shim for ten years, inspired by how corrugated iron and copper cladding create volume without adding weight in architecture. I love the repetition of the pattern, the clean curves, and the negative space it creates.
My early brooches used 0.1mm copper shim paired with 0.2mm brass, play-testing the contrast between smooth sheet metal and sharp, abrupt folds. After taking a break to travel to Japan, I came back to this research with fresh eyes.
Next reel coming soon...

THE LURE OF THE LURE
At first glance, romantic attraction is all about the flash. A bit of glitter, a reflective flick in the right light, or a seductive glow in the pitch black—and suddenly you are hooked.
This 2-metre neckpiece uses vintage lure spoon-style shapes in silver, glow-in-the-dark, and high-visibility neon to explore how easily we are reeled in purely by surface appearances. Even in total darkness, when you think you are relying on deeper instincts, you can still be fooled by the attraction of the glow. There is no escape.
The initial dance is thrilling: the lures spin, catch the light, and look irresistible. But once you take the bait, the reality sets in. Over time, the initial dazzle wears off, and you are left with a line so hopelessly snarled it is too damaged to repair.
Fishing terms give us a brutally honest list of dating types:
You have your Worm (low effort, lies low), the Jerk Bait (twitchy and unpredictable), the Fly (buzzes around until annoying), the Plopper (loud on the surface, zero depth), the Craw (always backing away) and the Chatterbait—constantly buzzing, high energy, and impossible to quiet down.

Attraction gets you to bite, but superficial flash rarely holds up under tension. Be aware and don’t just go for the sparkle—otherwise, you end up tangled in a two-metre line of your own making.

Looking back at an early exploration into surface design and shadow play. These three sterling silver rings feature a 6 cm band offset by a 6 cm top strip, manipulated through piercing, bending, and forming to change how light interacts with the metal. #handmadejewellery

Jewellery design is as much about material exploration as it is about beauty. These four brooch prototypes represent my ongoing studio research into upcycled plastics, custom-developed clasps, and tactile surfaces.

Sometimes, forcing a design doesn’t work. Just like in life.
For years, I tried to figure out how to integrate the wire into brooches without any soldering or attachments. Working on 19 unique pieces, I pushed hard, making mistakes, and hitting a wall.
Exhausted, I finally walked away. And by the next day, a fresh solution appeared.
Sure, I had to spend extra time repairing the damaged pieces, but letting go of my rigid force changed everything. Surrender led to a stunning new design that makes all the brooches look even better. WIP
