Emily Rach Beisel is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, educator, curator and woodwind specialist. Beisel is known for visceral performances blending extended vocal and instrumental techniques with analogue electronics. Their work is described as “heavy stuff, sounds retrieved from the deeper places… Beisel pokes around in the sonic depths and brings leviathans out to play. (A Jazz Noise)” As a curator, Beisel seeks to increase the visibility and involvement of femme, trans and nonbinary artists in the creative performance community. They founded the Pleiades Series at Elastic Arts, presenting monthly performances, community-based free improvisation sessions and a biennial PleiadesFest. Beisel holds a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, is a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 10-208 and is honored to be a 2024 3Arts Awardee in Music.

Lisa Cameron is a drummer, percussionist, and sound artist whose work has enriched Austin’s experimental music landscape for decades. Through amplified and acoustic percussion, she unearths frequencies already present in rooms and coaxes them into oscillating overtones, transforming these resonances into raw material for improvisation. She experiments with vibrational surfaces and extended percussion techniques, creating immersive sonic environments that channel an ancient spirit, fusing it with a contemporary approach. Her performances generate unexpected harmonics and complex overtonal relationships, whether working solo as Venison Whirled or collaborating with improvisers drawn to her singular methodology. In 2023, she received the Austin Chronicle Award for Best Drummer and Percussionist. A tireless collaborator, Cameron has performed and recorded with Roky Erikson, Daniel Johnston, Jandek, Claire Rousay, Eugene Chadbourne, Mike Watt, Thor Harris, Faust, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, and many others.

The Wild Detectives

Emily Rach Beisel, a visceral Chicago-based improviser, composer, educator, curator, and woodwind specialist, comes to Texas on a short tour with Austin drummer, percussionist, and sound artist Lisa Cameron, a collaboration developing since 2024, when they performed as a duo at the final Molten Plains Fest in Denton. Violette Bule is a multidisciplinary Venezuelan artist based in Texas whose practice uses social and economic vulnerability as a catalyst for creativity and political agency, engaging memory, data, digital technologies, and social justice to explore structural violence, migration, identity politics, and populism. wind thief, the new duo of Nicholas Cabrera and Michael Chamy reintegrated from the ashes of long-ago North Texas improv cadre Zanzibar Snails, utilizes obsolete communication media and antiquated test equipment, and for this concert they will be joined by longtime collaborator Michael Maxwell, who was part of Zanzibar Snails and The Watchers, among many other projects.

@sleepingbeasttx will be playing this Friday, September 25 at 8 40 pm for @nmass @Cherrywood Center ! I've been playing drums and percussion for several years in this fantastic trio with Htx's @dannykamins on reeds and @thomasheltonbass on double bass. We have a unique sound that incorporates a rich shared background of all types of jazz, from bebop to free jazz to improv to extended techniques . Emily Beisel and Lisa Cameron have been performing together for several years in Chicago at Elastic Arts, in Houston for Nameless Sound’s “They Who Sound Series, and Denton Tx’s – Molten Plains Festival, among other venues. They are currently working on a new recording to be released this year on Rural Isolation Project.

Super excited about this new cd which prereleases tomorrow on Marginal Frequency @laminalaudio via Bandcamp!

During the pandemic, I happened to see a fantastic guitarist on a livestream named Jessica Ackerley, @jessica_ackerley and I was intrigued. I reached out to her and inquired if she might want to come to Texas and do some shows ,and to my amazement she agreed! We did 5? shows in Texas in November of 2022 along with her fellow collaborator Eli Wallace @crate_on synth and recorded this entirely improvised session in Denton with the esteemed Justin Lemons at @infinite_ohm studios, with Eli recording incredible prepared piano parts,
and then this year exquisitely mastered by AF Jones.
I then did a diorama in an aquarium that I'm really proud of, inspired by seeing "Stalker" by Andrei Tartovsky, and then working with Austin's own John Foxworth to photograph and embellish it with psychedelic colors. The title, Zone Poems, is a nod to Stalker and also a pun on Arnold Schoenberg's Tone Poems series.
