Bb’s first @justseeds collaboration. Thank you @spirochristoff and the Concordia Labour History project for bringing this together. My grandmother arrived in Montreal (yep on a boat) with my young father, and within a couple of weeks she was already working in the shmatte district, and did so until this strike in 1983. Her story is not unique and that’s what social history is all about- telling a common story that highlights the contributions of ordinary people. New Celebrate People's History poster from Lisa Czech @lisaczech "On 15 August 1983, 9,500 workers from the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union went on strike in Montreal for the first time in 43 years, in what became known as “La grève de la Fierté.” Women working in the city’s garment factories took a bold stand to protect their jobs and working conditions against layoffs and closures prompted by industrial restructuring and deindustrialization.

Le 15 Août 1983, 9 500 travailleurs des sections locales montréalaises de l’Union International des Ouvriers de Vêtement pour Dames se sont mis en grève pour la première fois en 43 ans, dans ce qui est devenu « La grève de la Fierté ». Les femmes travaillant dans l’industrie du vêtement ont pris une position courageuse pour protéger leurs emplois et leurs conditions de travail, contre les licenciements et les fermetures provoqués par la restructuration industrielle et la désindustrialisation."
