POSTS STORIES REELS

Hi I’m Lisa I’m inspired by light. You can see my artwork at CityArt in San Francisco and other Bay Area galleries. I have a selection of small pieces and prints for sale in my shop on my website lisaknoop.com @sfcityartgallery @lisa_knoop #sfartist #sanfranciscofog☁️ #paintinglight by @lisaknoopstudio

It was such a pleasure to spend two days sharing work, talking about art, and seeing people slow down with the paintings and small mixed-media pieces. I’m always interested in what people are drawn to, what they notice, and the stories or associations a work opens up for them.

A huge thank you to Andrew and Liz for welcoming me into their beautiful studio and garden, and to everyone who stopped by, stayed awhile, asked questions, shared thoughts, and supported artists.

Feeling very grateful to have been part of it. ❤️

Fellow Creatures is a virtual exhibition bringing together work by Amey Fearon Mathews, Sarah McDowell, and Lisa Knoop as part of Fall of Freedom 2026.

The exhibition began with a question:
What does tenderness make possible in a time of fear, division, and hardening?

Across human, animal, and abstract bodies, the works move through touch, dependence, vulnerability, tension, care, and connection.

Last night at the Cantor and Anderson for the openings of Solid Pictures and Patty Chang’s Surfacing.

Solid Pictures is beautifully designed. The exhibition feels spacious and thoughtful, giving the work room to breathe and making the experience of moving through it part of the looking.

Surfacing is quietly powerful. Chang follows threads between humans and animals, scientific collection, labor, family histories, place, and memory, allowing meaning to build through unexpected connections. I kept thinking about curiosity as a method, following a question long enough to discover where it leads.

Both exhibitions left me thinking about the deeply human impulse to make meaning through images, objects, materials, and experience.

I sometimes feel vulnerable sharing my own thoughts about art while the work is still settling in me. But maybe that is part of what art asks of us too: to pay attention, to notice what moves us, and to stay with what we don’t immediately understand.

Really grateful for an evening of looking, thinking, and being reminded how much I need this kind of time with art. by @lisaknoopstudio

Sanmon II
Archival pigment print

Working with a photograph of light and shadow. I layered the same image, shifting and reversing it until the original space became difficult to locate.

I keep returning to the instability of seeing. A photograph seems to tell us what was there, but perception is never quite so fixed. Light changes the space. Our position changes it. Attention changes it.

The image becomes less a record of a place and more an experience of looking.

Sanmon II is currently included in Women’s Work: Women Artists Making Their Mark, the 18th annual online exhibition at O’Hanlon Center for the Arts, juried by Donna Seager and Irene Bee Kain.

On view online through October 31. by @lisaknoopstudio

Excited to have Edge of Becoming included at the Marin Community Foundation show. There’s something different about seeing a piece leave the studio and enter a shared space. The relationships change and you notice things differently.

Wonderful to see the beautiful space, expansive views and artwork from so many wonderful Marin Open Studios artists.

I was supposed to be looking somewhere else.

Instead, I kept staring at an opening where light entered the space. Nothing dramatic was happening. It was quiet, almost humming, but I couldn't pull my attention away.

At the Edge of Becoming grew from that moment of awe, from noticing when something quietly insists on my attention.

I wasn't interested in the architecture so much as trying to hold what the light was doing inside me: the subtle shifts in color, the sense of depth, and that strange moment when an ordinary space suddenly becomes impossible not to notice.

I'm happy to share that At the Edge of Becoming has been selected for the Marin Open Studios Juried Exhibition at the Marin Community Foundation Gallery.

Tender
Archival pigment print, 2026

One of the things that draws me to both painting and photography is that neither records experience.

A camera captures light. A painting records attention.

Neither can fully describe what it feels like to watch a sunset with someone you’ve known through many versions of yourselves, or to recognize how the familiar has changed because you have.

Much of my work begins in that gap.

Not in documenting a place or an object, but in asking how perception changes over time. How memory quietly edits what we see. How light, space, and experience become inseparable.

This photograph lingers in a nearly imperceptible moment: a leaf leaning toward the worn arm of a couch, the last light of day holding them in quiet relation. Nothing dramatic happens. Yet something is felt. by @lisaknoopstudio

Low Tide, North Coast CA
Oil on board, 2026

I’ve returned to this stretch of coastline for years. The cliffs remain, the rocks remain, but the place never feels quite the same.

Sometimes it’s the weather. Sometimes it’s the light. Sometimes I realize what has changed is not the landscape, but the person standing in front of it.

Lately I’ve been thinking about painting the experience of returning. Memory doesn’t preserve a landscape. It quietly edits it, layering one visit over another until observation and recollection become difficult to separate.

I’m interested in that space between what is seen and what is remembered. by @lisaknoopstudio
