AUTUMN GOLD. “And all at once, summer collapsed into fall…” —Oscar Wilde

Happy first day of fall!

The march of color across the mountain is well underway now but, due to the drought we’ve been experiencing, some of the Aspens are not as vibrant as they were when this photo was taken several years ago. There are still many beautiful trees, though, and this spectacular season cannot be diminished by the dullness of a few trees!

WINDING DOWN. Today is the last day of meteorological summer. Meteorologists group seasons by temperature rather than the Earth’s axial tilt that astronomers use so meteorological fall begins September 1st while astronomical fall won’t begin until the autumnal equinox on September 22nd of this year. For much of the country, however, summer weather will continue well into September. For others, well, fall is upon us and winter is not far behind.

I thought this photo from Larrabee State Park in Bellingham, WA, taken in 2023, would be fitting for the last day of August.

COLORADO DAY 150. I’ve experienced some technical difficulties posting today but I didn’t want the day to go by without a photo to honor the 150th anniversary of Colorado becoming a state. This quintessential Colorado view can easily be seen from Highway 550 (if you’re brave enough to drive it) near Red Mountain Pass heading from Silverton to Ouray. In my opinion the San Juan Mountains are in the most beautiful part of Colorado. I can’t help but think of those who live around Ouray. It’s been a rough summer there.

UNPREDICTABILITY. Today is a lovely, sunny spring day but we received more snow last month than we had all winter and several years ago on the first day of June Mother Nature dumped 15” of snow on us. The Rockies at 9,800 feet are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. 😆

More snow would be welcome, though! This past winter was one of the warmest and driest with the snowpack being the worst in recorded history. Several wildfires occurred and were more able to spread due to the dry conditions. Climate change is real.

There’s talk of a Super El Niño on the way, which usually means more snow, for next winter. Bring it on!

FELLOW TRAVELER. A reminder on this Earth Day that the earth does not belong to us to do with as we please. We are but one species among countless traveling around a small star in a vast, unfathomable cosmos. And, as the saying goes, “There is no Planet B.”

I don’t often use Instagram to express my political views but the current state of the Union goes way beyond politics.

I don’t care who you are—Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian, Green Party Member, whatever—you should not be okay with what’s been going on in this country.

We can all join together in this #NationwideShutdown and send a clear message that we will not stand for it. by @lisalakel

AMAZING AURORA. The northern lights are a riot of color tonight! We don’t get to see them very often so it’s always a treat when they make their way to Colorado. Though even if I saw them every single night I’m sure I would be filled with awe each and every time.

ADMIRING THE VIEW. It’s such a beautiful time of year here on the mountain that even the bears are enjoying the views.

(Side Note. I’ve not been posting on Instagram for awhile due to some debilitating health issues. It’s been a long 9 months or so but things are much better controlled now and I’m finally able to attend to many long-neglected activities and tasks, including posting photos!)
