BEFORE YOU PRESENT ON A SENSITIVE TOPIC, KNOW WHERE YOU STAND.

You do not have to arrive with every answer. But you should have done more than gather a few facts and make a slide deck.

Read beyond the voices that agree with you.
Examine your assumptions.

Ask yourself what you know, what you believe, and where you may still have something to learn.

Then pay attention to your own heart:
- Is there a part of this subject that makes you defensive?
- A question you hope nobody asks?
- An experience you might be too quick to dismiss?

Do that "dark work" before you enter the room.

Being objective does not mean pretending you have no perspective. It means being honest about your perspective and careful with the people and experiences you are speaking about.

When your thinking is clear and your heart is settled, you can speak with both conviction and care.

And there is another wonderful thing that happens when you take the time to figure yourself out before a highly sensitive talk or presentation:
