This project is a reflection of healing. I hope it resonates with you in some way. I am excited and proud to finally share it with you.

Directed and edited by @lisaonthebeat and @3mm4n @emmangination_studios
Filmed by @3mm4n
Choreography and casting by @josephineev
Starring @korina.casillas @klauette_ @alanaw_18
Production Assistants @mawcxs @jessmcn3ly @re_naar @cielo_chavez_

Thank you @facilitydancealumni for the rehearsal space

This project was filmed on land that belongs to the Kumeyaay and Cahuilla people, who have nurtured and cared for their ancestral homeland since time immemorial. As residents of San Diego, we recognize that we have benefitted from centuries of colonialism that has sought to displace and erase the native people and their culture. We gratefully acknowledge and honor the Kumeyaay and Cahuilla people, along with the many other Native communities, whose traditional and ongoing care for the land made this project possible. We ask that you join us in our solidarity and support of these communities as they continue their efforts to preserve their homeland, culture, and sovereignty.

Had the pleasure of performing at @ladiesfirstjam Unity showcase with @pricillurr . At our home base @subterranean_northpark ! Very special for several reasons.

This performance was the first time Pricilla and I danced to this track together, which we did to showcase the spirit of this dance. It’s about connection, a conversation, and trusting your partner and yourself to create a moment that can never be fully replicated. So we listened to the song a couple times, talked about general timing and some moves, and then said “let’s just do what we do”. In this dance, this is about as vulnerable as it gets. And so many women showed their strengths and vulnerabilities that night, it just felt appropriate for us to do the same.

My other intention was to show the women in our communities that there are so many ways to explore femininity and sensuality, and that we are trying to create a safe place to do so. hustle is not an inherently close contact or sensual dance, and whether you want to create such a dance is within your control.

Our @newstylehustlesd community is incredibly intentional about the space that we create and @nova_nbk201 was the one that pushed us ladies to be more visible in leadership and in teaching. I will always be grateful for that. The women in our community support each other, the men in our community have the same values and affirm us. And I am so proud that so many people choose to lead and follow, regardless of their gender expression or identity. So if you’re a woman who isn’t comfortable dancing with guys yet, you don’t have to. Come dance with us ladies first!

thank you Priscilla for doing this with me on such short notice. Thank you for trusting in me and in us. You are the reason I know the importance of connection as a lead. You are the reason that I understand how important trust is to have a good dance. And that when it’s there, you can create magic.🪄

Thank you again @ladiesfirstjam and @cielo_chavez_ for having us, and all our friends that came!!

FREE PALESTINE. If everyone spoke up we could never be silenced; you’re seeing that now.

Posting something as simple as this could designate us as terrorists. If so, I’d rather die in fucking prison than stand even a centimeter behind genocide.

You’ll have to get all of us if you want us to stay quiet. by @lisaonthebeat

Slowing it down West Coast Style. So lucky to have this beautiful park as our home base. Many friends from many places have danced with us here. A lot of hustle journeys started here as well.

Our 8 year anniversary is about to come up, and we have some special plans to celebrate. What are some of your favorite memories with NSHSD? Let us know in the comments so we can kick off our anniversary right!

New style hustle is at its core, a social dance. And the great thing about a group of friends that you social dance together with, is that every time you hang out, you dance.

You’ll find us in the club, sure. At our socials of course. But we also danced together at the beach, parks, museums, coffee shops, raves, Janet Jackson concerts, breaking jams, dance battles, silent discos, maritime symphonies, movie theaters, karaoke boxes, restaurants, and our living rooms, just to name a few.

It’s a blessing that a group of likeminded people made possible. This is my chosen family @newstylehustlesd

And I want yall to know that there’s always room in our family for more likeminded people. We have a really loving community here.

Thank you for the dance @sloanem_art and the video @deguz.media . Love having you in our family. taken in Air Conditioned Lounge by @lisaonthebeat
