Apparently I have been on a mission to make 냉면 nengmyun (nengmyeon, naengmyeon), Korean cold noodles, a thing for some time as documented by this caption in a Facebook photo from 2015 (evidenced by photo 4).

Thank you Danny @palumbros for lovingly capturing this very beloved and unique Korean dish for @eater_detroit that does not get enough love outside of the Korean community.

I’ve been eating these noodles in ice cold vinegary beef broth (there is also a brothless spicy kind 비빔냉면 (bibim nengmyun)) for what seems like my entire life in restaurants and even more at home. My mom would make this for us regularly. One of my core memories as a child, and I haven’t got many, is a near death experience by almost choking on a great mouthful of these noodles at a restaurant in Koreatown once. THIS is why we cut the noodles with scissors, it’s serious business.

@snoozer_sewa and I had so much fun shopping at H Mart, gabbing, cooking, and eating in such good company. Special thanks to @11boks for always being so cool.

Here are a bunch of random photos of bowls of this noodle I’ve had in LA, SF, and Detroit often accompanied by 갈비 galbi (marinated LA style short ribs) through the years. by @lisapie

From Korean burrito to Detroit-style pizza! 🌯 🍕🔥

LA native @lisapie took inspiration from the Korean-Mexican flavors of her upbringing and transformed it into a Detroit-style pizza at @grandmabobspizza in Corktown.

The pizza features soy garlic braised beef, kimchi, a sesame crust, crunchy cabbage slaw, and a drizzle of sour cream.

Lisa is this month’s guest pizza maker for Spread Dough, Grandma Bob’s charitable pizza collaboration. Proceeds from her creation benefit @detroitasiancollective an organization she co-founded to connect and support Detroit’s creative community.

From her roots in LA’s Koreatown to London and now Detroit, this pizza tells a story of food, culture, and community.

Real friends come pick you up even though you told them not to and take you to fly a kite on the most perfect weather day and pick clover flowers to make a wreath and watch a Polish freighter go down the river and eat tacos and then go on a long night walk. by @lisapie

서울 Seoul sights

I so loved seeing all of the spaces and buildings and signage. The ghosts of buildings and signage. The things to come.
The expanse of Korean typography is so fun. I could not get over how creative people can be and also practical. by @lisapie

It took me almost 11 years to get to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and during the performance tonight, I could not help but think about what a wild and varied week this was but this was also a typical week.

The folks at Folk running outside to give Milhouse, who is staying with me for the week, treats when we walk past.

There was so much pottery, there was a huge conference in town and so it was like ceramics overload and it brought me so much joy seeing all of the ceramics cuties (you can tell cause they are cool) from out of town walking around Corktown.

Spending time with friends playing a silly card game. Splitting the last shrimp. Getting so hot dancing to Italo electro disco. An unplanned double date inside a bank vault. Watching kids and adults doing their very best to whack a birthday piñata. Spicy noodles shared with friends.

I’m always in awe of the people that present themselves, the conversations I hear and have, the beautiful art I hear and see, and collectively being so moved by someone else’s grief and loss and relating to it and crying en masse in public but feeling ok about it because I’m sitting with friends. by @lisapie

Happy spring equinox dinner with Julién Godman.
I honestly don’t think I’ve had Armenian cuisine before, which is kind of surprising because i spent the first almost 30 years of my life in LA, which has the largest diaspora of Armenians outside of Armenia.
Lots of herbs, fresh herbs, labneh, pickled vegetables, roasted root vegetables, a surprising warm yogurt soup with wheat berries, fruits, lovely rice pilaf and lamb.
And friends, of course.
Bravo, Julién @oldmediaman it was really fun to get to taste what I missed out on when i first moved to Detroit.
And thank you to @frankkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk for hosting this beautiful space @din.nerparty by @lisapie

Still feeling the high of yesterday’s Soup for the Soul. I was thrilled and honored to be back for a second year raising money for @freedomhousedetroit which aids refugees starting a new life here in Detroit. It was an afternoon filled with so much love, good soup and most importantly, your smiling faces that showed up to support. What a fantastic group of folks who made soup, each so different and really so very good.

This is exactly the kind of community I want and I can’t believe it exists and I am so lucky to be a part of it.

Thank you @shubsiya and @frankkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk for organizing this beautiful event. I’m so grateful for your continued kinship. And thankful to @collect.beerbar for graciously hosting a second year in a row.

WE MISSED THEM SO MUCH AND I THINK ABOUT THEM A LOT AND I MOURN BUNNY BUNNY MORE THAN YOU CAN KNOW CAUSE I THINK IT WAS THE MOST EXCITING FOOD IN DETROIT AND BEYOND.
So I was thrilled to be able to eat @bunnybunny_detroit food and see their beautiful faces when they did a cute guest appearance in Detroit at Shelby. I rounded up my Valentines and we ordered everything on the menu and we loved it all. 😭
Cal was extra chuffed as he has been a fan and he learned that our heroes will be on the upcoming Top Chef, which he has been watching a lot of this past year.
Until the next time we meet again 💖 (Please come back to Detroit, Justin and Jennifer, you don’t have to make different life choices for our sakes but we love you and we need you ok) by @lisapie

Rye, UK June 2025

I was delighted to be reunited with an old friend who I met in London the first time I lived there. I can’t say who it is because they aren’t online but if you were in London with me 2005-2006, you know who it is. Anyway they are kind of person who drops off the face of the earth for years but then when you see them again, it’s like no time has passed. And that kind of feeling of an easy connection with another human being where time means nothing is a trip. They call you “pie” like they always have and remember all sorts of shit you forgot.

It was a rushed morning as I had to take two trains and one or two underground lines to get to St. Pancras and they met me on the platform with flat whites. The train was crowded because it was filled with people going to the seaside as it was quite hot. We took a very quick trip to Rye, a town I have never been to, to visit the most beautiful fabric store called Merchant & Mills because they needed to choose fabrics for cushions. I definitely fantasized about learning how to sew because the fabrics were that swoon worthy.

Had a great brunch at The Fig. Tromped around the beautiful town, a wedding was taking place at the church so the bells were going and you could see the wedding party waiting around the back, learned about medieval poopholes, had a half pint of shandy just like in the olden days at the Mermaid Inn (Queen Elizabeth I was a guest here in the 1500s), caught a train back to London and parted ways. by @lisapie
