POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last week I stood in Arena di Verona and sang Turandot to a crowd that gave me everything back. That kind of exchange is rare, and to be in community with an audience is one of the greatest gifts of performing.

Tonight I get to do it all again under that same sky. Grateful for this stage, this role, and singing it with @yusif_eyvazov_official.

One hour before curtain. Dinner two blocks away. A phone call: "Would you like to make your Met debut tonight?"

Yes. Yes. Yes.

No rehearsals. No walkthrough of the set. No meeting the conductor. I grabbed my score, ran to the theater, and stepped into that iconic costume in front of a packed house at the Metropolitan Opera.

When I finished "In questa reggia," I heard something I couldn't immediately place. I turned to one of the dancers. "What is that?"

"It's applause."

“The electrifying Lindstrom sings Brünnhilde with laser-focused intensity, her gleaming soprano cutting thrillingly through the orchestra. Her final immolation scene — among the most demanding and exalted passages in all opera — proves overwhelming in both vocal command and dramatic conviction.” - @artsatlanta

Reveling in another night of singing Wagner’s glorious Götterdämmerung score!

What an utter delight it is to share the stage with this rockstar cast and creative team at @theatlantaopera. I am always excited to tell this story with them.

People assume singing opera is a solitary act. Hours alone in a practice room, hearing a role come alive in your head before anyone else hears it. That part is real.

But the thing that pushes me over the top isn't anything I do alone. It's standing on stage with people who want to reach farther than they've ever reached, who are using every bit of energy in the room to hoist each other somewhere none of us would get to on our own.

Something that looks terrifying from the outside, you never actually do by yourself. The conductor, the orchestra, the chorus, the audience ready to meet you halfway. All of it conspiring to make the moment spontaneous and once in a lifetime, every single time.

We are so lucky. by @liselindstromsoprano

What's your dream job?

I chose this path because music did something for me that nothing else could, long before I ever set foot on a stage. It gave me a way to express what I couldn't say out loud.

Music connects total strangers in the same room, at the same moment, in the same feeling. For a few hours, everyone is part of something bigger than themselves.

If one person in the audience leaves feeling less alone, I've done the job. by @liselindstromsoprano

Dramatic soprano Lise Lindstrom on learning to tell the difference between a role that stretches you and a role that breaks you. Turandot doesn't forgive an unprepared top, and Lise is candid about what it takes to know you're ready before you ever walk on that stage.

There is no line more terrifying than 'Ah, ich habe deinen Mund geküßt.' The last thing Salome sings, right after she gets exactly what she asked for.

It is one of the most thrilling moments to sing in opera. Strauss doesn't let you soften it. The orchestra is enormous, the harmony is bent almost past recognition, and you're standing there holding a head, completely alone in the sound.

This is as dark as it gets. Happy spooky season! by @liselindstromsoprano

Everyone wants to know what it takes to become a star. But the truth nobody puts on a poster: it has nothing to do with convincing a room full of people you belong in it.

You can't. Not really. There will always be someone deciding whether you're worthy, and you will never win that vote for good.

So I stopped trying. The only person whose belief actually moves anything is mine.

Being seen and heard starts with seeing and hearing yourself first. Stand in your own light. Say the honest thing. Sing in your truth. And let the room catch up.

Be strong. Be yourself, unapologetically. by @liselindstromsoprano

We meet Turandot as a woman who has built a kingdom out of her own fear. Every suitor who fails her riddles dies, and she watches without flinching. She is, on paper, the villain of her own story.

But underneath the ice is someone who has never once been allowed to be anything other than untouchable. Puccini gives Turandot a journey toward warmth, and it happens in almost no time at all.

What moves me most about her is the instant everything changes. Not love at first sight, but the jolt of recognition when someone sees through the walls you built to protect yourself. She lets go of a lifetime of control in a single phrase.

I know that feeling. The letting go that only happens after everything else has been mastered first. The moment you stop performing the technique and just trust it. by @liselindstromsoprano

Turandot has been with me for over two decades, and while she has always been a challenge, it is a challenge that has brought me great satisfaction and joy. Turandot at Arena di Verona gave me that again this season, and I am so grateful to have shared that extraordinary stage with such exceptional artists and the magical Arena audience.

"Lise Lindstrom sang Turandot, a role that marked her professional breakthrough at the Met in 2009. Her voice was steely and strong. Her experience of singing Brünnhilde and major roles in the Richard Strauss canon was evident, while she was able to do full justice to Puccini's musical idiom. Exposed high notes sounded effortless and their poise was never shrill. There was a good combination of single attack notes and long, sustained legato lines. Lindstrom's singing underlined the shift in Turandot's character across the duration of the opera as a gradual development; not a sudden or ultimately unconvincing change of heart. Thus, there were many striking moments of softness of the heart underneath the outward (protective) shield of ice, which Lindstrom portrayed on her Act II entrance at the start. This made the character more complex and thus even more intriguing." — Seen & Heard International
