Around Copenhagen with @lisevester This conversation is part of Around the City With, an ongoing series exploring cities through the people shaping their creative landscapes. Designers, entrepreneurs, artists and architects share how their work is influenced by the places they inhabit, offering a more personal perspective on contemporary design and culture. OFFICINET, once the pharmacy of Frederiks Hospital and now part of Designmuseum Danmark, is reimagined as a kind of “sensory pharmacy.” The setting is anything but incidental: derived from the Latin officin, meaning “workshop,” the word evokes a place where materials are combined, refined, and ultimately transformed. Created for Muuto’s 20-year anniversary, Inner View Object by Danish designer Lise Vester explores how a shift in perspective can change the way we experience a familiar space. Mouth-blown in Murano and released as a limited, numbered edition of 150 pieces, the sculptural object brings together generations of glassmaking knowledge with Vester’s ongoing interest in perception. Its convex, reflective surface captures more than a conventional mirror, drawing light, movement, color, and the surrounding room into an image that is always changing. At the heart of Murano’s glassmaking tradition is the furnace. Here, intense heart transforms glass into a material that can be shaped by hand. Molten glass takes shape through heat, movement and precise timing. Each step relies on the knowledge of Murano’s glassmakers, whose hands guide the material while it remains fluid. The final object is mouth-blown in a mold, which gives the overall form consistency, but the handmade process is still visible. There can be tiny bubbles, differences in thickness, or subtle shifts in color intensity. “No two pieces are completely identical. I think those variations are beautiful because they reveal the making process” — Lise Vester Vester started by experimenting with glassblowing, making different convex and concave forms and exploring traditional silvering techniques. The reflective layer sits behind the glass, so the glass’s curvature determines how the surroundings come back to you. The object is already constantly changing depending on the light and the space around it. Color adds another layer. As a designer, I am exploring how design can make us see the world from a new perspective, and affect and support our emotional lives. I am interested in how design can capture the small, magical ‘awe’ experiences we know from nature, like when we look up at the sky and are struck by a particular mood, or by unexpected elements that give us new ways of experiencing and understanding the world. In “Design on Prescription,” @officinet , a former pharmacy, is being transformed into a sensory design pharmacy. Officin translates from Latin to “workshop”: a place where something is mixed, refined, and dispensed. The exhibition is built around 4 long “pharmacy plinths,” each exploring a specific sense and prescribing a poetic pause through: Sound, Sight, Light and Bodily posture 🎵🪞💡☁️ Alongside the works, the plinths display process elements: optical glass lenses, scale models, material research and design principles from neuro aesthetics, presented in precisely cut niches inspired by the systematic rhythms of pharmacy drawers and pill packaging.
