Bad Words by Rioghnach Robinson is out now! 🎉

I love a book about books and tore through Bad Words, a thought-provoking romance with excellent character exploration 💖

✨What it’s about
Parker Navarro is an author, whose debut novel had great promise until it was ripped to shreds by the notorious critic, Selina Chan, nearly destroying his career. Now his second book is set to launch and he gets another scathing review from Selina, inciting a very public feud. In parallel, they begin a private dialogue via email, leading them to discover that there may be more to each other than their public personas suggest.

✨ What I loved
* It’s a substantive read that explores topics such as family, the publishing industry, mental health, authenticity, and the contrast between public and private personas
* The character development feels intentional and makes you understand the perspectives of both main characters
* I sometimes find enemies-to-lovers books to be too light on the enemies component, but Robinson definitely does the trope justice!
* The book made me think about the role of literary criticism and I appreciated the conversations that unfold around this through the conflict between the MCs

✨Who it’s for
I’d recommend Bad Words to anyone looking for a thought-provoking story with true enemies-to-lovers along with elaborate character building. Genre-wise I felt it leans more towards literary fiction at times, so something to keep in mind if you’re looking for a fluffier rom-com.

✨Favorite quotes
* “That’s why I write. Because what I say in real life is a shadow of what I can articulate in writing. I hardly ever know what I think until I write it down.”
* “This was how it felt, then, to love someone: To sacrifice clarity. To let go the illusion of objectivity. To give every word the benefit of the doubt.”

September was a slower reading month for me because I was traveling. This was a month where I bought more books than I read, but I’m ok with that and had so much fun visiting some incredible bookstores!

In terms of reading, I got all caught up on the Fence graphic novel series by C.S. Pacat (really hope there will be a new book soon! ). I especially loved getting more of Aiden and Harvard’s backstory in Fence Breakthrough: Quarter Clash #1.

Czechia was one of the places I traveled, so I made a point to read Too Loud a Solitude for my Read the World challenge while I was there.

I also enjoyed continuing my buddy read of The Kindred Curse’s Saga with @javi15een.

Here are the books I read in September:
* Fence Vol. 7: Challengers by C.S. Pacat
* Fence Breakthrough: Game Changer #1 by C.S. Pacat
* Fence Breakthrough: Quarter Clash #1 by C.S. Pacat
* Glow of the Everflame by Penn Cole
* Night of the Mannequins by Stephen Graham Jones
* Too Loud a Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal

I recently read Spark of the Everflame as part of a traveling annotation with friends (@pnwbookhound, @softlysapphirereads, @thenybooknook) and also did a buddy read with @javi15een! Reading with friends is so much fun, and I loved getting to see everyone’s thoughts about the book.

This story is book 1 in the popular Kindred’s Curse Saga, which follows Diem, a young woman in a magical world inhabited by mortals and Descended (descendants of the gods with magical abilities). After Diem’s mother mysteriously disappears, Diem’s profession as a healer brings her to the palace to treat the Descended royal family. There she finds secrets to be uncovered and a fearsome (but very handsome) prince who seems to turn up everywhere.

This book is a great choice if you love romantasy- there are a lot of elements in common with other romantasy stories, which makes it feel familiar in a comforting way. Diem, the FMC, makes very frustrating choices at times, but I admired her strength and independence and appreciated that she was already a capable fighter when the story begins. Spark feels like it’s laying the groundwork for the series in establishing the world and characters, so I’m definitely continuing with the next books to see where the story goes! 🔥 by @lit.with.eri

✨ARC Feature

I read an ARC of Second Generation Blues by Julio Anta with illustrations by Red Dryer. The story follows Luis Menendez, a teenager living in Queens who has a successful social media platform and dreams of becoming a music journalist. It’s summer vacation and his friends are all out having fun, but Luis’s parents need him to help out at their family Cuban restaurant, which has fallen on hard times. As if this juggling act weren’t enough, an intriguing young woman named Yara has also caught his eye. The story follows Luis as he tries to live up to his responsibilities to his family while also forging his own path.

This graphic novel is an engaging, immersive read that captures the challenges of being a second generation kid along with themes of family and coming-of-age. I loved the illustrations, which really brought the story to life. Luis is a main character who is easy to relate to and root for, and I’d love to see what happens next in his story.

Thank you so much to the @julioanta, @redwuds, @harpercollinschin @netgalley for the ARC! taken in Queens, New York by @lit.with.eri

August Reading Wrap-Up 📚

Ahh I can’t believe it’s already September! Cooler temperatures have arrived and the leaves are starting to change, so it does feel like fall (even though I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to summer).

August was an excellent reading month for me! I participated in my library’s book bingo challenge this summer, so a number of my August books satisfied the prompts. I appreciated the inspiration to try new genres and authors through the bingo prompts (while making this wrap-up I realized all the books I read were from new-to-me authors!) This challenge reminded me of the library summer reading programs I did as a kid so that was a fun throwback.

So many great reads here, so I am working on some separate posts about them. I ended up doing a lot of audiobooks because I had some tedious sanding/painting tasks around the house, and was grateful that these wonderful stories helped me pass the time and finish my projects!

Here are the books I read in August:
* The Poet Empress by Shen Tao
* That Which Feeds Us by Keala Kendall
* Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole
* Cinder House by Freya Marske
* A Shore Thing by Joanna Lowell
* So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo
* Face Off by Chelsea Curto
* The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston
* Arrête avec tes mensonges (Lie with Me) by Philippe Besson
* Fishing and Fisherman Conversations by Petar Hektorović
* Second Generation Blues by Julio Anta & Red Dryer taken in BOOKSTA by @lit.with.eri

🎧Audiobook Review: Cinder House by Freya Marske

I finished this Gothic retelling of Cinderella in a day and had so much fun reading it! This is one of those books where it’s better to go in knowing as little as possible, so I won’t say too much.

In this version, Ella is a ghost inhabiting her father’s house. It is a retelling, but that doesn’t make it predictable, and I was so curious to discover how the author would weave in the familiar elements of the classic fairy tale.

I did the audiobook, and Anna Burnett did a fantastic job with the narration, keeping things engaging with great timing and different voices for the characters. If you’re looking for a paranormal fairy tale retelling that feels whimsical and is a short read, I recommend checking this one out! taken in BOOKSTA by @lit.with.eri
